Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Chase Bayern Defender Medhi Benatia, Top Rumours

Rob BlanchetteMay 23, 2016

Arsenal have initiated discussions to sign Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia as manager Arsene Wenger attempts to strengthen his defence this summer.

According to French media outlet Foot Mercato (h/t TalkSport), the Gunners are wasting no time in tempting the player to north London when he was "deemed surplus to requirements" after Der FCB captured Mats Hummels.

The 29-year-old player has struggled for game time in the Bundesliga after suffering a series of injuries through the campaign.

Benatia recently addressed the moot point surrounding his fitness and availability, as quoted by the Mirror's Liam Corless.

"I can't explain why I am injured that often," Benatia said. "I have three years contract left in Munich. If Bayern want me to leave—no problem. If they want me to stay—I will stay."

The Morocco international started only 11 matches for Bayern in the German league last season, according to WhoScored.com, but is considered an experienced talent at the back when ready to play.

Here is the defender in action for his club:

WhoScored.com highlighted the Bayern player's defensive skill set despite his lack of starting opportunities:

In other news, Arsenal have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfield star Ilkay Gundogan.

James Ducker of the Telegraph reported the currently injured Germany international is set to join Pep Guardiola's revolution at Manchester City in an initial £20.1 million deal.

The Express' Charles Perrin said the Gunners "had eyed" Gundogan as they attempt to replace outgoing players from the Emirates Stadium.

James Robson of the Manchester Evening News highlighted just how high Gundogan is rated by the greatest managerial minds on the planet:

Benatia has been considered one of the best defenders on the continent during his time with Roma, but the arrival of Hummels will see him almost certainly depart.

Arsenal and the Moroccan are a good fit in principle; he is a stronger talent than Per Mertesacker and would enjoy the challenge of the Premier League.

However, his recent injury record would be a concern, but he could be willing to take a favourable deal with Arsenal if he wants regular first-team football at a UEFA Champions League team.

Wenger might see genuine value in Benatia's purchase, allowing him to focus funds on other parts of the squad after a disappointing year.
