Rory McIlroy Donates His $750K in Winnings from Irish Open to His Foundation
Rory McIlroy captured his first win of the year at the Irish Open this past weekend, winning by three shots at 12 under, but his play on the course wasn't the only thing that had fans applauding.
In fact, the win wasn't on his mind during his post-tournament interview. All he could think about was his foundation.
The Rory Foundation hosted the tournament, with the proceeds from the tickets going to the charity. McIlroy took it a step further by donating his winnings—666,000 euros (nearly $750,000)—to the charity.
According to the foundation's website, the goal is to help kids live better lives:
"This is what we do and what we stand for. It will be at the very core of every project we work with and every programme of change we are part of. The Rory Foundation is a nonprofit charitable trust with the ambition to have a positive impact on children's and their families' lives. Our goal is to release funds that seek to advance opportunity and lasting change for children who are suffering from ill health or who are unfairly disadvantaged or vulnerable to life's circumstances. Our underlying values are ambition, passion and drive. These values lie at the heart of our foundation and will help us instigate real change for children in every country in which we work.
"
The foundation raised more than 1,000,000 euros through the tournament this past week.
