Preakness Results 2016: Twitter Reaction to 141st Race from Pimlico
On a rain-soaked track in soggy Baltimore, Exaggerator defeated 10 other horses to win the 141st Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Cherry Wine was the runner-up, followed by Nyquist in third place.
The monumental win for Exaggerator was extra sweet because it gave him his first victory over Nyquist in five attempts and ended the Kentucky Derby champion's quest for a Triple Crown before June's Belmont Stakes.
Nyquist and Uncle Lino were dueling back and forth for most of the race, heading into the final turn in the top two spots. Exaggerator jockey Kent Desormeaux waited for his opening down the stretch to kick his horse into gear for the win.
Twitter exploded following Exaggerator's victory at Pimlico Race Course.
NBC Sports shared footage of Exaggerator's clutch performance:
The puns with Exaggerator's name were easy to make, as Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post proved:
Larry Stone of the Seattle Times also had fun with Exaggerator's name while discussing the horse's sure-to-be-legendary post-race interview:
Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports provided a cross-sports comparison for Nyquist's strategy down the stretch, which at least didn't have the same catastrophic results:
Here are the best of the rest of the reactions from social media:
With Exaggerator finally getting over the Nyquist-sized hump that has plagued his career for the last year, all of the focus will now turn to the Belmont Stakes on June 11.
There's no guarantee that both horses will enter the race. Now that the Triple Crown is out of the equation and the horse has suffered his first career defeat, Nyquist's owners could decide to call it quits.
If both horses make it to New York in three weeks, it will provide horse racing with its greatest one-on-one showdown since Animal Kingdom and Shackleford battled back and forth in 2011. Exaggerator has the momentum now, but Nyquist has the career advantage.
