Veteran stars Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Fabian Johnson headline the list.
Klinsmann spoke about his choices, per Steven Goff of the Washington Post:
"We look over the last two years who progressed coming through that was not in Brazil, and we also know who are going to be the future faces of the men’s national team going forward. But as of today, this is the strongest group of players we believe we can have, and we still give all the compliments and respect to the players that are left out.
"
The most notable absence is young star and forward Jordan Morris, who was left off in favor of veteran striker Chris Wondolowski, Klinsmann said in an interview with Fox Sports (via Andy Edwards of NBC Sports). He also revealed that Brad Guzan would be the team's starting goalkeeper.
With Jozy Altidore missing the tournament to injury, Klinsmann's selections at forward will be the most scrutinized, with no like-for-like replacement on the roster for the country's normal starter at the position, as Ryan Rosenblatt of Fox Sports noted:
"Notably, none of the four are especially strong back-to-goal players capable of serving as a target man like Altidore is. Klinsmann has essentially chosen not to replace Altidore and presumably will have the Americans play differently in the attack, taking advantage of the strengths that his forwards do have instead of trying to force one of them into Altidore's more physical role.
"
If the forwards struggle in this tournament, the decision to pass on Morris will be another strike against Klinsmann for his growing list of detractors.
In the midfield, Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Kyle Beckerman, Alejandro Bedoya and Graham Zusi are all mainstays. The players to watch, though, are Christian Pulisic and Darlington Nagbe. Pulisic, just 17, worked his way into Borussia Dortmund's first team this season and scored two goals in nine Bundesliga appearances (four starts).
Defensively, Johnson, Matt Besler, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, DeAndre Yedlin and Timmy Chandler give the United States a solid pool of options in front of Guzan.
The USMNT will be in Group A with Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay, kicking off the tournament on June 3 against the Colombians. The squad will have friendlies against Ecuador on May 25 and Bolivia on May 28 in preparation for the tournament.
