Liverpool Transfer News: Ben Chilwell Eyed Amid Alberto Moreno, Arsenal Rumours

Rory MarsdenMay 20, 2016

Leicester City's Ben Chilwell has reportedly been earmarked by Liverpool as Alberto Moreno's long-term replacement, but Arsenal are also interested in the 19-year-old left-back.

According to MailOnline's Dominic King, the Reds "believe they have won the race" to sign the £3 million-rated Chilwell to provide competition for Moreno, who was very poor in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday.

However, Arsenal are also targeting the Englishman—"viewed as one of the best young players in the country"—having failed with an initial attempt in January, as they look to replace Kieran Gibbs in the summer, King added.

Liverpool's need for further depth in the left-back position was highlighted on Wednesday after Moreno, 23, was terrible against Sevilla, per Bleacher Report's Dean Jones:

The Spaniard can be brilliant going forward and certainly has defensive capabilities, but he is far too unreliable and is prone to lapses in concentration.

There is currently little competition for Moreno at left-back in the Liverpool side, an issue that manager Jurgen Klopp needs to rectify over the summer.

Chilwell would certainly go some way to solving the problem. He is hard-working and has excellent distribution skills, which could serve him well in the German manager's setup.

However, having recently been on loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town, he has very little top-level experience and is far from the finished article.

If he is the only addition Liverpool make at left-back over the summer, the Merseyside club will still have a problem in the position.

Fortunately, it seems the Reds also have their eye on Cologne's Jonas Hector, 25, per the Mirror's Alex Richards:

Competition with Arsenal over Chilwell could be a problem for Liverpool, as the Gunners will be able to offer him European football next season, something Liverpool cannot.

Klopp could play a big role in persuading the Englishman to move to Anfield, though, as he has a terrific record of granting opportunities to youngsters, so Chilwell should be attracted by the greater potential for first-team action at Liverpool than Arsenal.
