WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Feuds Guaranteed to Disappoint Fans

Aaron BowerMay 19, 2016

The road to WWE Extreme Rules 2016 has been littered with promise, but there has also been an impending sense of disappointment.

WWE's annual trip down a more anarchic route often has fans excited for the level of extremity they're about to witness, but even the most brutal stipulations cannot save some of the pay-per-view's ailing feuds.

Whether it's repetition—a feeling that it's all been done before—or just a rivalry's failure to capture the imagination, some of the show's bouts will fail to sparkle, and here's why.

Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler

Another meeting between Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler will kick things off on the Extreme Rules pre-show, but don't expect anything other than an overwhelming sense of disappointment from the bout.

There's been little TV time dedicated to this storyline, with the occasional beating from either man being the only brief exposure the feud has had.

That already suggests it's going to disappoint, and the fact it didn't make it to the actual show is another indicator that it's not going to be given a real dedicated slot to allow these two men to show off what they can do.

For some reason, WWE is intent on having Corbin fight nobody but Ziggler on the main roster, and with the success of the likes of Sami Zayn and, to a lesser extent, The Vaudevillains, Corbin's first few weeks on the main roster have been fairly quiet.

The more frustrating aspect of all this is that when they wrestled at Payback, it was a good match. WWE should have saved the rematch for Extreme Rules, but instead, they've already wrestled again, which has done nothing to continue the storyline.

It's unclear what the future holds for Corbin, but hopefully it will involve wrestling some other guys when (or if) he moves on from Ziggler. As for this feud, expect it to pass without causing too much of a stir.

Charlotte vs. Natalya

It may be a tad harsh to put this feud on the list, as there's every chance it could result in one of the best bouts of the night.

But if WWE resorts to the lazy booking it has used on so many occasions, bringing in an external influence, the whole contest and feud will deceive fans once again.

Let these two wrestle for a significant period of time; they're two of the most talented wrestlers in the women's division. If you have to have Ric Flair get involved, let it be with a slight swerve, with Charlotte possibly turning on her father.

Having Flair come down, distract Natalya and allow Charlotte to pick up another cheap win does nothing to enhance the storyline or Charlotte's character development.

Things have to be done differently this time if this feud is going to have any sparkle and leave fans talking about it in a positive light.

Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles

The main feeling heading out of last month's Payback show was one of disappointment when it came to the main event.

Roman Reigns' victory against AJ Styles was so hollow that it was hard to know where to turn next. Styles threw everything he had at the champion, but with just a couple of moves here and there in the closing stages, Reigns was able to put AJ away.

That didn't leave Styles looking particularly good. Neither has the shoddy booking that has left Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows looking weak heading into Extreme Rules.

It's likely Reigns will score the win again, but it needs to be done right this time. If Reigns is going to be the champion who is on the road to becoming a heel, have him win unfairly.

Have Styles feel cheated post-match and not look weak yet again after a defeat, which, if there is no controversy attached to it, would send AJ to the back of the line.

You suspect WWE may not have learned the lessons it should have from Payback. If Reigns wins in a similar fashion this weekend, the feud will be dead and buried.
