WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Updated Match Card, Bold Predictions for PPV

Aaron BowerMay 17, 2016

WWE's annual trip into the extreme offers fans with the most intriguing edition of "Extreme Rules" in years.

Not since the 2012 edition, arguably the show's best, has there been a card and a general buzz that has fans excited about what lies ahead at the pay-per-view.

There are some fine matches in store for fans to look forward to, and there's every possibility of some major upsets and twists taking place.

With just days to go until the pay-per-view, here's the final card and some bold predictions for what we're going to see.

Match Card

1 of 4
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin (Pre-show, No DQ Match)
  • The Miz vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn (Fatal 4-Way, Intercontinental Championship)
  • Charlotte vs. Natalya (Submission Match, Women's Championship)
  • The New Day vs. The Vaudevillains (Tag Team Championships)
  • Kalisto vs. Rusev (United States Championship)
  • Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho (Asylum Match)
  • Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles (Extreme Rules Match, WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Dean Ambrose's Career Will Take a Significant Step Forward

2 of 4

It's a testament to the popularity of Dean Ambrose that, despite losing over and over again on pay-per-view, he retains a positive relationship with WWE fans.

This Sunday though, that should all change. Ambrose added a win on pay-per-view to his name recently when he defeated Chris Jericho and Payback, and he'll back that up with another here.

Seeing off Jericho in a rather unique match setting will be the thing that sets Ambrose off on a major run of form and momentum.

Two wins from as many pay-per-view shows is unthinkable given Ambrose's record as a solo star. If he wins this week, he'll be on a huge roll.

Cesaro Will Win the Intercontinental Championship

3 of 4

You could basically make a case for any of the four men involved in what looks like the evening's standout bout emerging as the winner.

However, if WWE is serious about pushing Cesaro and continuing his character and career development, it should be the Swiss Superman.

First of all, you get the feeling that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn could continue their exciting rivalry without a belt being involved. They should continue to fight all the way to "SummerSlam," where their feud would culminate with an epic, lengthy encounter.

So that leaves The Miz or Cesaro, but given how impressive the latter has been since he returned from injury, it feels like it's time to reward him. He hasn't lost any of his sparkle inside the ring, and his character looks like it has been polished slightly, too.

AJ Styles Will Win the Main Event

4 of 4

You read that right.

It doesn't quite feel like Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles, including The Usos and The Club, is ready to end yet.

Another Reigns win would surely send Styles to the back of the line, and with the big names just not quite ready to return from injury yet, why not have Styles go over?

It would inject fresh impetus into the rivalry, give fans something that they never thought they'd see and take everyone by complete surprise.

And another thing, can WWE please make sure it books Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in a stronger manner? They've been made to look unbelievably weak since they joined the company, and with Styles going over here, this should be where they look at their menacing best.
