According to Matt Molloy of WHAM in Rochester, New York, Marvin is on the Autism spectrum, and Max has fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition causing developmental and intellectual disabilities.

In early May, the two participated in the Special Olympics at North Rose-Wolcott High School in Wolcott, New York.

Max and Marvin lined up next to each other for the 50-meter dash. As the race began and Marvin fell behind, Max took his hand and ran with him to the finish line.

Max's mother, Diane Pogoda, told Molloy, "Kids see no barriers—race, friendship, competition. It's just about love."
