Injured UTEP Softball Player Gets Base Hit in Final Collegiate at-Bat
Kawehiokalani Netane, a senior member of the UTEP softball team, tore her ACL in April—but that wasn't about to stop her from getting one last at-bat to end her college career.
UTEP head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk put Netane in as a pinch hitter during the team's final game, a 10-4 loss to Southern Miss in the Conference USA tournament.
In a fitting and touching moment, Netane delivered a single up the middle. She hobbled to first base before being replaced by a pinch runner and embraced coaches and teammates as she made her way off the field one last time.
Per Matt Eisenberg of espnW, Echo-Hawk said, "Having her get her last at-bat and hit the ball the way she did—you can't ask for a more storybook ending to finish her career. I'm just so proud of her and glad she got the opportunity to do that."
