WWE NXT: Full Preview, Match Card and More for May 18

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 17, 2016

Welcome to Bleacher Report's preview for this week's episode of WWE NXT, where we'll take a spoiler-free look at what's in store for the developmental brand's upcoming episode.

NXT usually features one match from the women and one from the tag teams, with the men's singles division getting three or more bouts.

However, this week's show will heavily feature the women's division in two matches and the tag team division across three bouts, one of which will feature two stars teaming together for the first time.

Austin Aries will join forces with Shinsuke Nakamura to take on former NXT tag team champions Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy.

There's no real storyline here. This is just two veterans taking on two up-and-coming Superstars in what should be a great match.

It would certainly be a feather in their cap if Blake and Murphy could get a win over two stars like Aries and Nakamura, but all it would get them is bragging rights.

This is likely a one-time thing for Aries and Nakamura, but you never know. Maybe this is the first appearance of what will become NXT's next great tag team.

As far as the women's division is concerned, Carmella will be in action this week against Peyton Royce. Like the first bout, the only thing on the line is pride.

Carmella needs to show off what she is capable of if she hopes to join Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady on the main roster anytime soon.

Winning and losing doesn't matter at this point. All Carmella has to do is put on an impressive performance, and the right people will take notice.

The other women's contest will see Nia Jax going up against former women's champion Bayley.

These two had a brutal encounter for the title at TakeOver: London, which saw Bayley choke out the much larger Jax to retain her championship.

Now that the title isn't on the line, Jax has a much better chance of getting the win. She needs to establish her dominance, and defeating everyone's favorite hugger would be a great start.

If she can defeat Bayley, Jax may find herself in the running for a shot at Asuka and the NXT Women's Championship.

The second tag match of the night will see rookies Danny Birch and Rob Ryzin taking on Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa.

Ciampa and Gargano have wrestled quite a few singles matches in NXT, so it will be nice to see them back together as a cohesive unit.

A win over two rookies wouldn't usually mean much, but with NXT needing to rebuild its tag team division after losing The Vaudevillains and Enzo and Cass to the main roster, it could be the start of WWE building Gargano and Ciampa into a threat to American Alpha's titles.

The main event is going to be a rematch from TakeOver: Dallas, but the tag titles won't be on the line this time when Jason Jordan and Chad Gable battle Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder.

Jordan and Gable have only gotten more popular since becoming champions, and beating the men they took the belts from for a second time is the best way to prove their title win wasn't a fluke.

As far as talent is concerned, both of these teams are ready for the main roster, but WWE should keep them in NXT until a few new teams can be formed to fill the gap left by the most recent call-ups.

It's a nice change of pace to see the tag team and women's divisions being given the main focus for once. Which match are you looking forward to the most?
