Manchester United Transfer News: Anthony Martial, Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rumours

Christopher SimpsonMay 17, 2016

Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be set to swap places this summer as Paris Saint-Germain reportedly want the former to replace the Sweden international when he becomes a free agent, while Manchester United are considering a move for the experienced striker.

According to French outlet L'Equipe (h/t Calciomercato), Les Parisiens will be in the market for a new striker when Ibrahimovic leaves and are "targeting" Martial as his replacement.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail's Ralph Ellis reported United have scouted the 34-year-old and "are debating whether to make a formal contract offer." His salary demands are reportedly in the region of £12 million per year, and he is also the subject of interest from MLS clubs.

French outlet RMC (h/t ESPN FC) reported a one-year offer had already been tabled by United, but that speculation was dismissed by Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola on Monday when he spoke to Sky Sports:

Despite his age, Ibrahimovic enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career as he racked up a staggering 48 goals and 18 assists in 50 appearances.

Former Red Devils star Rio Ferdinand believes he would be a fantastic addition to the Premier League:

Indeed, those are qualities United would benefit from as they look to restore the swagger they enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson, not to mention he'd be a strong short-term solution to their troubles in the final third.

Meanwhile, Martial has produced an excellent debut campaign at Old Trafford with 18 goals and eight assists to his name—an outstanding return for a young player in a team struggling to convince going forward.

WhoScored.com revealed his importance to United's attacking play:

ESPN's Alex Shaw believes the club should secure the 20-year-old on a long-term deal:

Indeed, United are desperate for firepower and should be looking to add to what they have rather than taking away from it.

Because Ibrahimovic is already leaving PSG, the French outfit have little to bargain with beyond money—United don't need to use Martial to land him so there's nothing stopping them snapping up the veteran and having them both—so it seems unlikely the Red Devils will allow one of their brightest young stars to depart the club.
