Phil Jurkovec to Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Land 5-Star QB Prospect

Brian MarronMay 16, 2016

Notre Dame picked up a huge commitment on Monday when quarterback Phil Jurkovec announced his intentions to play college football for the Fighting Irish.

Jurkovec is a 5-star prospect and the class of 2018's top dual-threat quarterback, per 247Sports' composite rankings. According to 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong, Jurkovec committed during a visit to South Bend, Indiana.

Jurkovec was set on Notre Dame before even arriving for the visit, according to Wiltfong.

"I came up here with the intent of committing," Jurkovec said. "It's the right fit for me. The whole education of Notre Dame from the books to the spirituality, the whole university and everything that it offers—I just fell in love with it."

He picked the Fighting Irish over top programs such as Alabama, Ohio State and Penn State.

The Fighting Irish are getting a gifted kid with a strong arm who is able to extend the play with his legs and pick up extra yardage. At 6'5" and 190 pounds, Jurkovec has Ben Roethlisberger skills, but he needs to put on more weight as he develops. Here are Jurkovec's highlights, courtesy of MaxPreps:

ESPN's Tom VanHaaren noted that Jurkovec will join an already deep and talented Notre Dame quarterback room:

Unless Jurkovec comes in and overwhelms the coaching staff in a couple of years, he could be spending a lot of time on the sidelines early in his career.

DeShone Kizer replaced Malik Zaire early into the 2015 season after the latter went down with a season-ending injury. Kizer, then a redshirt freshman, led Notre Dame to an 8-3 record and threw for 2,884 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Kizer is back, along with Zaire (a senior next season), and it appears he will still be around when Jurkovec arrives. Brandon Wimbush, the nation's No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015, per 247Sports' composite rankings, will also likely be on campus.

Having a lot of talent at one position, especially quarterback, can sometimes be a good problem. It appears Notre Dame will soon have one of those problems.
