WWE Raw: Potential Spoilers, Rumors, News and Preview for May 16

Ryan DilbertMay 16, 2016

The final stage of construction for the Extreme Rules 2016 card will get underway at WWE Raw on May 16.

Fans have long known that AJ Styles and Roman Reigns will go to battle at Sunday's pay-per-view. Bouts for the Women's Championship, United States title, Intercontinental Championship and tag team belts are already set, but acts like Emma and Fandango might be late additions to the party.

Plus, Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose's feud is poised to get its own official Extreme Rules matchup. The two rivals have been ambushing each other each week, and it's time for them to settle things in the kind of weapon-heavy matchup this PPV is famous for.

Greensboro, North Carolina, plays host to the go-home edition of Raw. Social media, backstage reports and the Raw preview on WWE.com offer insight into what to expect as that show unfolds.

On Tap

The tag team division is set to welcome a new team—sort of. Epico and Primo, who previously competed as Los Matadores, have been repackaged as The Shining Stars.

Judging by their recent vignettes, they are two braggarts from Puerto Rico. And as announced on last week's Raw, they will make their re-debut on Monday.

It's odd timing to introduce The Shining Stars this week, as WWE will be focusing so much on Extreme Rules. That is, of course, unless they make waves right away and get a spot on the PPV card.

News, Potential Spoilers

Raw will welcome back a familiar face (and voice) when Lilian Garcia takes over announcing duties once more.

There had been rumors about her being among the talents released recently. Garcia, though, posted on Facebook that she was away due to personal issues. The announcer tweeted that she will return to action on Monday's Raw:

AJ Styles will be back, too, after a brief absence. The Phenomenal One didn't appear at the weekend's live events as scheduled. Styles noted on Twitter that he's been dealing with an ankle issue but will be ready come Monday night:

Ryback's own time away appears to be ongoing. The Big Guy is currently at odds with management, as he revealed in a recent Tumblr post.

Don't expect a resolution of this situation soon. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc), Ryback is not expected to be back. The company may choose to simply let his contract expire rather than release him.

Monday's Raw could see the formation of a new tag team. After Fandango and Tyler Breeze both turned on their respective partners on Thursday's SmackDown, both hinted at an alliance between the two, retweeting messages relating to this possible partnership.

Fandango simply posted the following:

If this duo ends up happening, that would explain why WWE has invested so much time of late in showcasing Breeze, Fandango, R-Truth and Goldust.

Extreme Rules Build

Jericho vs. Ambrose has not yet been added to the official Extreme Rules card, but that is poised to change. Considering how much spotlight this feud has received, it's destined to be a part of the PPV.

A pair of questions linger. Will there be a stipulation added to the contest? And will Colin Cassady continue to be involved?

Last week, Cassady collided with Jericho in the opening and closing segments of Raw. The WWE preview teased that he could be crossing paths with Y2J again. It read, "The sky seems to be the limit for 'The Best in the World at What He Does,' provided, of course, Big Cass doesn't come calling again."

The Becky Lynch-Emma rivalry is likely to turn into a tag team affair.

Dana Brooke debuted on last Monday's Raw, attacking Lynch during a backstage interview. With Brooke and Emma's NXT alliance reformed on the main roster, is Lynch going to enlist some help to balance things out?

The WWE.com preview stated, "With the powerful pair poised to make life hell for Maiden Ireland, Lynch might find herself in need of some extra #straightfire—or, failing that, a tag team partner will do."

Raw's marquee story will continue to be Styles' pursuit of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and all the animosity and chaos that surrounds it.

At first hesitant to employ the villainous way of Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Styles has become more intense and more willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. Fans had long expected to see Reigns turn heel, but recently it's looking like it will be The Phenomenal One who will make that transition.

That character shift, how The Club and The Usos fit into this narrative and how WWE is able to turn up the bad blood between all these warriors will be major parts of Monday's Raw.

Can WWE maintain this feud's momentum ahead of Extreme Rules and make that PPV feel like a must-see event? That will certainly be the goal in North Carolina on the go-home show.
