Darryl Sutter, Kings Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Tim DanielsMay 13, 2016

The Los Angeles Kings and head coach Darryl Sutter reached an agreement Friday on a multiyear contract extension.

The Kings announced the news on their official site and noted the new deal will go into effect for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Financial details weren't immediately available.

Los Angeles has been one of the league's most successful franchises since Sutter took the reins during the 2011-12 campaign. The team has qualified for the postseason four times in five years and captured the Stanley Cup twice, including in his first season in charge.

The 57-year-old former left winger has accumulated a 186-112-45 record during that span. His .608 points percentage with the Kings is the best of his four head coaching stops. He has also spent time with the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames across more than two decades.

He led the Kings to the second-best record in the Pacific Division this season with 102 points, which represented a seven-point improvement from the playoff-less 2014-15 campaign. The postseason run came to a quick conclusion, however, as the San Jose Sharks knocked them out in Round 1.

After the season, Sutter shot down any speculation suggesting he would leave the Kings, telling Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times, "I have no desire to go anywhere else or do any of that. We'll get it worked out. That's my plan."

Getting him locked up now will allow the front office to focus on other offseason issues. The most notable is a group of potential free agents that includes Milan Lucic, Kris Versteeg, Luke Schenn and Trevor Lewis.

Though the roster may feature a handful of new faces next fall, those players will enter a system that's proved highly effective. In Sutter's four full years in charge, the Kings own a remarkable four of the league's top eight seasonal Corsi percentages, according to War-On-Ice.

That consistent success in the possession battle, combined with the team's Stanley Cup triumphs under his watch, made signing him to a new deal a no-brainer for the Kings.
