Arsenal vs. Aston Villa: Arsene Wenger's Key Quotes from Pre-Match Presser

Rory MarsdenMay 13, 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he is "disappointed" that his Gunners side failed to mount a proper Premier League title challenge this season.

With only a game to go in the 2015-16 campaign Arsenal still have a slight chance of pipping Tottenham Hotspur to second place, but they are guaranteed to finish at least nine points back from champions Leicester City.

Ahead of Arsenal's final match of the season against Aston Villa on Sunday at the Emirates, Wenger said his side are "frustrated" not to have been more competitive with the surprise title winners, per the Telegraph:

"

It was a strange season and we finish disappointed. We had a chance to win the title and we are frustrated.

Leicester had consistent results and everybody else had ups and downs. Is it down to the fact Leicester was a surprise package? Or the fact they had one competition?

There is no rationale between their success and you have to say they have been remarkable.

"

The summer's Euro 2016 tournament in France is looming after the end of the Premier League season, and Wenger insisted that Theo Walcott deserves to be part of Roy Hodgson's England squad despite an inconsistent campaign, per Arsenal:

Wenger also backed France to go all the way in their home tournament but added Spain and Germany will also be contenders, per the club's Twitter feed:

One Arsenal player who will not be going to the Euros with England is Danny Welbeck after he picked up an injury in the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Manchester City last time out.

He has now been ruled out for nine months after having surgery on his knee. Wenger said, per the Telegraph: "We're all devastated for him. The whole team is thinking like that. I expected at worst for him to miss the Euros. We will support him, and I have a secret hope it could be shorter."

Wenger also hinted that Welbeck's injury could alter Arsenal's plans for the upcoming summer transfer window, per the Evening Standard's James Olley:

Sunday's clash with already-relegated Villa should be a routine victory for Arsenal, the Birmingham outfit having not claimed a win since early February.

Per ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery, the hosts should receive a boost from the likely return of Mesut Ozil, while they have more than enough quality in their ranks to see off Villa with ease:

However, even a big win on the final day will do little to ease frustrations after another disappointing season for the north London side, and Arsenal have work to do in the summer if they are to return improved in 2016-17.
