Chelsea Transfer News: Mario Gotze Talks Reported Amid Latest Liverpool Rumours

Rory MarsdenMay 13, 2016

Chelsea have reportedly entered the race with Liverpool to sign Mario Gotze after former manager and incoming Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti "alerted" them that the German is not in his plans for next season at the Allianz Arena.

According to Phil Cadden in the Sun, Chelsea will now look "to beat Liverpool to land [the] £35 million World Cup winner" after Ancelotti, who was in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2009 and 2011, tipped the Blues off that he does not plan to use Gotze at Bayern next season.

As a result, Chelsea are believed to have already held talks with the 23-year-old's representatives and have left long-term suitors Liverpool "trailing in the chase," added Cadden.

Gotze made the switch from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern for £31.5 million back in 2013, but he has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular under manager Pep Guardiola.

During the current campaign, he has made only 10 Bundesliga starts, scoring one goal and providing four assists, per WhoScored.com.

The upcoming arrival of Ancelotti looked as though it could have been an opportunity for Gotze to finally prove his worth at Bayern, but it seems the Italian manager will not give him the chance.

And if he is indeed available for £35 million, Chelsea would do well to snap him up. The Blues have endured a terrible 2015-16 season and need to make some key additions in the summer if they are to return to the level of title challengers.

Per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe, despite his travails at Bayern, Gotze remains a world-class talent and would be a good addition to any side:

Also, per Cadden, incoming Blues boss Antonio Conte "has approved the move for Gotze."

Alongside an in-form Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, Gotze could form a very intimidating attacking trio at Chelsea, and the Premier League could be the perfect place for him to show off his many attributes.

The Blues are likely, though, to be fiercely challenged for his signature by Liverpool, as Gotze could also fit very well into manager Jurgen Klopp's system.

Gotze emerged as a genuine talent under Klopp at Dortmund and has been much linked with a reunion with his former boss, per Paul Joyce in the Express.

He would surely be tempted by the chance to link up with Klopp again at Anfield, and Liverpool may also be able to offer him UEFA Champions League football next season if they win the UEFA Europa League—something Chelsea cannot do.

However, the Blues seem to be leading the race to sign Gotze, and he would undoubtedly be a very exciting addition to both the west London club and the Premier League.
