John Cena: News, Rumors on WWE Star's Recovery from Surgery for Week of May 12

Aaron BowerMay 12, 2016

Expect the landscape of WWE to take another dramatic shift at the end of this month with the Cenation leader is set to come back.

Since his cameo appearance at WrestleMania 32, talk has continued to intensify over when John Cena will be making his in-ring return following surgery on a shoulder injury back in January.

WWE went public recently and confirmed that Cena's return is now only a few short weeks away following the reveal that he would return on the Memorial Day episode of Raw at the end of this month.

And as that date inches ever closer and WWE's marquee star prepares for his return to competition, there's further details emerging as the weeks go on about what could be in store for the Cenation leader.

For instance, what about the story that broke earlier this week? WrestleZone's Nick Paglino passed along the news of a commercial WWE aired locally in Honolulu, Hawaii, during this week's Raw advertising Cena making an appearance at an event on June 29.

Initial feuds and storylines are not clear for Cena once he returns to television, but the aforementioned commercial revealed Cena will take on a major name from NXT.

With Brock Lesnar fighting Kevin Owens on that show, Cena will take on Shinsuke Nakamura in a huge match that will pit the present and recent past of WWE against its future.

With other big names such as AJ Styles also slated to appear at the show, per Paglino, this looks like one of the cards of the year. Perhaps WWE will opt to make it a Network special, like it has with other shows out of the United States in the past.

Elsewhere, WWE's first-quarter earnings call took place this past week, and Vince McMahon revealed a few details about the immediate future of the company, according to Marc Middleton of Lords of Pain.

This doesn't necessarily relate to Cena, but Middleton noted that once Cena is back on the Memorial Day Raw, it should be the catalyst for other stars to make their way back from injury, too.

Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt are the three other Superstars mentioned, and with plenty of fresh talent making their debuts in recent weeks and months, the arrival of such an influential quartet back on the active roster makes for an intriguing few months ahead.

It probably comes as no surprise that WWE wants Cena to be the first big return, as the impact and momentum generated by his first few weeks back on WWE TV will create a huge buzz for what lies ahead.

And with just two more episodes of Raw to go until he's back on the company's flagship show, expect more details, more news of imminent feuds and much more to become clear in the next two weeks.
