David Ortiz Makes Young Fan's Day by Giving Him a Bat, Pounding Knuckles

Kyle NewportMay 12, 2016

The relationship between Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and fan Maverick Schutte is, hands down, the best sports story of the year.

About two weeks ago, Big Papi made a promise to Schutte—who was born with a heart defect—that he would hit a home run for him:

Well, not only did Ortiz go yard later, his home run wound up being the game-winner in a 4-2 victory over the rival New York Yankees. Per Sam Galanis of NESN, Maverick's parents said it was the happiest they had seen the youngster in a while.

Fast-forward to Wednesday night, when Ortiz once again was able to bring a huge smile to Maverick's face. Numerous times.

Maverick got to hang out with Big Papi down on the field before the game, and the young fan threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his favorite player.

For the game itself, Maverick and his family had front-row seats behind home plate. The proximity to the Red Sox dugout led to one of the coolest moments you'll see. While Maverick was being interviewed by NESN, Big Papi handed one of his bats to the family, leading to yet another special moment between the slugger and the fan.

And that is why sports are so great.
