Torrey Smith, Garrett Celek Comment on Chip Kelly's Offense

New San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly is instituting his fast-paced offense that once dubbed him as an offensive genius three years ago with the Philadelphia Eagles before being run out of town. 

Almost four months into Kelly's tenure, San Francisco's new system is receiving some solid opening reviews, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. 

Tight end Garrett Celek likes the way Kelly's offense raises the tempo of things:

This offense, I think personally, is easy to learn, once you get it down. There’s a reason we can go so fast. It’s a simple offense. Once it clicks, we can just go, go, go. … 

In the past we had a lot of delay-of-games because either we’re not getting the play in time from upstairs or it’s just taking the quarterback too long to read the whole play out.

Where now, it’s a lot quicker. We have hand signals, so you can’t have 15 words through hand signals, stuff like that. It’s got to be boom, boom, boom. So when you got less verbiage, it’s easier to remember. It’s kind of genius.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith admitted that there is a lot of studying that he has to do:

"

The biggest thing is grasping it. It’s like learning a new language for us -- and sign language at that. It’s different, but it’s very organized and very detailed the way they teach it. … 

It’s a lot of signals and things like that. So if you don’t know, you don’t know. You have to be on your job and continue to work away from here.

"

He did go on to say that he liked the system and that it will be able to get opposing defenses off of their game. 

When run correctly, Kelly's offense is one of the best in the league. In 2013, the Eagles ranked second in total offense behind the high-powered Denver Broncos with 6,676 yards. The following year, they were fifth with 6,348 yards. 

But it is a demanding offense, and Kelly was accused of not being able to connect with his players. In such an intricate system, players have to want to succeed for the coach as much as themselves.

On a 49ers team that just had their worst season since 2010, and with a quarterback in Colin Kaepernick that is coming back from offseason surgery, patience is imperative for success. 

In a tough NFC West division that features the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, big offensive outputs might not come immediately. If they don't, Kelly has to hang tough with his team and keep acclimating it to the system. That way, he and the 49ers will have a better chance at extended success while he is at the helm.
