Liverpool went into Thursday evening's UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal with a 1-0 deficit from the first instalment following Adrian Lopez's last-gasp sucker punch.

Jurgen Klopp, who has won his previous four home encounters with Spanish opposition (as per UEFA.com), picked an attacking lineup in an attempt to sink the Yellow Submarine:

The pre-match rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was particularly emotive:

In the sixth minute, the Reds levelled the tie when Villarreal captain Bruno turned in an own goal:

In the 14th minute, a diagonal piercing pass from James Milner almost doubled the lead on the night:

In the 25th minute, Thomas Pina had to head another Liverpool chance wide:

As the first half progressed, Klopp was typically animated on the sidelines:

Former Spurs forward Roberto Soldado wasn't winning any plaudits at Anfield for his behaviour:

Kolo Toure, meanwhile, was not afraid to press high up the field:

In the 62nd minute, Liverpool went ahead for the first time in the tie via Daniel Sturridge:

Roberto Firmino was only too happy to turn on the showboating:

In the 71st minute, there was more bad news for the visitors when Victor Ruiz was given his marching orders:

Shortly afterwards, Firmino came close with a powerful strike:

With 10 minutes remaining, Liverpool got their much-needed insurance goal through Adam Lallana:

It finished 3-0 to Liverpool on the evening, giving the Reds safe passage to their 12th European final.
