Rising Pune Supergiants stunned Delhi Daredevils with a seven-wicket victory on Thursday, earning their third win of the 2016 season and, in the process, preventing their hosts from climbing level at the Indian Premier League summit.

Thisara Perera entered the fray in Pune's 18th over and hit 14 from five balls—including two sixes—to save the result for his side after a limp batting display from the visiting party left the result in serious doubt.

Rajat Bhatia and Scott Boland took two wickets apiece in Delhi's opening innings and did well in limiting the capital outfit to 162 from seven, with JP Duminy ending as his side's top batsman with a modest 34 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane lasted the entirety of Pune's innings and mustered an admirable 63 of his own, but MS Dhoni's flagging form left some uncertainty as to whether the guests could chase down their opponents' lead.

Thankfully for coach Stephen Fleming, Perera was on hand to add a potent spin in the final exchanges. The following is a recap of Thursday's result, complete with the latest standings and upcoming schedule ahead.

Delhi Daredevils vs. Rising Pune Supergiants

Rising Pune Supergiants (166 from three) bt. Delhi Daredevils (162 from seven) by seven wickets.

Victory over midtable Pune on Thursday would have bagged Delhi a fourth home win of the season, but the Daredevils came unstuck in front of a home audience for the second time in their last three host outings.

Rishabh Pant notched just two runs off eight balls before Ashok Dinda bowled him out, and Sanju Samson was just three overs behind as Boland teed up Ravichandran Ashwin for the catch.

Karun Nair impressed with 32 off 23 balls, but then came Bhatia's turn to impress, showing his versatility and giving Perera the first of his two catches midway through Delhi's innings. Commentator Ayaz Memon took notice of the Pune star's contribution:

Duminy was run out by Rahane next, relieving the Daredevils of one of their most dangerous weapons, before Bhatia got back in on the action, with Rahane catching off a full length on leg stump, much to Pune's pleasure:

Sam Billings looked in dangerous form after bagging 24 off 15 balls, and Delhi saw out the remainder of their innings managing just 22 runs between their last three batsmen, leaving Pune with a big chance.

Rahane came to play a big hand in hounding down the deficit, and Cricbuzz highlighted how stingy he and partner Usman Khawaja were before reaching the 50-run marker:

That strong start laid a firm foundation for Pune to build from, but the runs were coming slowly, and Khawaja's luck ran out when Samson took his stumps after looking fairly desperate attempting a big hit.

Billings' fielding came to the fore for Delhi as he caught Saurabh Tiwary and Dhoni in succession, and Memon took note of the fine lines that separated the tie, with Pune just needing one hot streak to push on:

Perera provided that after coming in at fifth in the order, and while Rahane's contribution was slow and reliable, his quick injection was wild, but equally as welcome.

Rahane deservedly took man-of-the-match honours, according to the official IPL website, and Dhoni said his team can look for positives after surprising Delhi in their own backyard:

"

That was the first game where the bowlers kept to the plan. There were plenty of positives to take from the game. I think the execution of the bowling plans was much better. We were a bit uncomfortable in the middle chasing.

I think it was a well earned victory for us. Their spinners bowled well in the middle. It's a well earned victory for us. Taking one game at a time really helps. This victory was needed to get the confidence back.

"

The Daredevils will look to bounce back winning ways on Saturday when they travel to face Kings XI Punjab, while the Supergiants will meet Royal Challengers Bangalore hoping to extend their streak.
