Amir Khan Talks Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin

Rory MarsdenMay 4, 2016

Amir Khan believes a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be "easier" than his upcoming WBC middleweight title clash with Canelo Alvarez on Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Englishman is stepping up from welterweight to a catchweight of 155 pounds to take on the Mexican star in a very challenging clash, and Khan believes Mayweather should come out of retirement and face him should be beat Alvarez, per Dev Trehan of Sky Sports:

"

I think the Mayweather fight has to happen if I beat Canelo.

Styles make fights and I really believe a fight with Mayweather would be easier than a fight against Canelo.

Canelo has got that physical strength whereas Mayweather would be like a game of chess.

I've got a massive fight with Canelo in front of me and by winning this fight it would definitely take me on to the biggest fight of my career and a bigger one than the one I'm going to be facing on Saturday.

Before retiring with a perfect 49-0 record Mayweather snubbed Khan, 29, on numerous occasions despite him being a legitimate opponent for the former pound-for-pound king.

The American has started to make noises about a comeback, with Khan suggesting "it looks like he's [Mayweather] going to fight again," per Jeff Powell in the Daily Mail.

Should he overcome the odds and beat Alvarez—whose only career defeat was to Mayweather in 2013—Khan would surely be one of the top contenders to take on Money, 39, upon his potential return.

However, he will not be the only opponent for Khan, whose opportunities will open up massively should he claim the middleweight crown.

Initially, he will be contractually obliged to face Canelo again should he win at the T-Mobile Arena, and Khan knows only a devastating victory for him could force the 25-year-old to waive the rematch option, per Powell: "'For him to waive that I will have to give him such a beating that he wouldn't fancy it again."

Given Khan is a significant underdog, and many see the fight as something of a mismatch, it is unlikely the Olympic silver medallist will win convincingly, if at all, per boxing writer Steve Kim:

However, Khan is clearly confident that he can make the huge step up in weight and even foresees a future in which he stays at middleweight, perhaps to take on Kazakhstani knockout merchant Gennady Golovkin, per Powell:

"It may be that I find this is my best weight. I've been dealing comfortably with bigger sparring partners. Who knows? If I beat Canelo I may find myself sitting down with my team to discuss fighting Gennady Golovkin."

Khan faces a huge challenge against Canelo on Saturday, but he has an opportunity to claim the biggest win of his career, one that would make him one of the biggest names in his sport.

There is no guarantee that a Mayweather clash would follow, but it could certainly be a possibility, as could the chance to avenge his 2012 loss to current WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

Khan is undoubtedly taking a risk in stepping into the ring with a fighter as powerful as Alvarez, but the rewards on offer are huge should he be able to upset the Mexican.
