Jordan Spieth Comments on 2016 Masters Collapse

Joseph ZuckerMay 3, 2016

Jordan Spieth suffered a Masters collapse for the ages in April, but the 22-year-old said Tuesday that he has moved on to the point that he's laughing about what happened at Augusta National Golf Club.

"I'm not taking it very hard," Spieth told reporters at a FedEx Cares event, per ESPN.com. "I have ladies at grocery stores coming up and putting their hand on me and going: 'I'm really praying for you. How are you doing?' And I'm like, 'My dog didn't die. I'm doing OK.' I'll survive; it happens. It was unfortunate timing."

On the 12th hole in the final round, the 2015 champion carded a quadruple bogey, going from one shot up to three shots down:

Spieth closed the gap between himself and eventual winner Danny Willett to two strokes with three holes to play, but he did not complete the comeback. Watching Spieth award Willett the green jacket made for awkward television (via ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr.):

In time, the 2016 Masters will likely become no more than a footnote in Spieth's career. Greg Norman is remembered for choking at the 1996 Masters, but he was in the twilight of his time as an elite golfer, and Spieth has plenty of opportunities ahead to leave a lasting image that trumps his collapse at Augusta.

The Texan will look to defend his U.S. Open title at Oakmont Country Club in June, and having a short memory about the Masters will surely benefit him in that pursuit.
