Shula Has Been To Hospital Multiple Times in Recent Weeks
Tuesday, May 3
Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported the news on Shula, which came via the coach's wife, Mary Anne Shula. She did provide an encouraging update in a statement to ESPN.com's James Walker:
"Coach Shula has been admitted to the hospital due to fluid retention and sleep apnea. The family is looking for a speedy recovery."
This isn't the first time Shula has been omitted to a hospital recently, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, who added he's been "in and out over the past few weeks."
Beasley specified Shula, 86, was hospitalized in South Florida and added he recently presented Miami Heat president Pat Riley with the 2016 Don Shula Sports Legend Award only a few weeks ago.
Shula won two Super Bowls during his exceptional career and led the 1972 Dolphins to a perfect 17-0 record, which still stands as the only undefeated championship season in NFL history. He then guided the team to another championship the following year, capped by a 24-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII.
Not long after Shula's epic Miami tenure that spanned from 1970 to 1995, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 1997 class.
