Kolkata Knight Riders grabbed a much needed win during Monday's 2016 Indian Premier League Twenty20 action, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets.

Lokesh Rahul (52 from 32) and Virat Kohli (52 from 44) got Bangalore's innings off to a good start, and a late barrage saw saw their total jump to 185. Kolkata's chase started off slow, but Yusuf Pathan kicked into gear at the right time, scoring 60 from 29 to lead his team to a win.

Royal Challengers vs. Knight Riders

Kolkata, 189/5 (Pathan 60, Morkel two for 28) beat Bangalore, 185/7 (Rahul 52, Chahal two for 27) by five wickets (with five balls remaining).

Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field, sending their vaunted bowlers out in search of early wickets against Bangalore’s explosive batsmen.

Chris Gayle lasted less than two overs before he was caught by Robin Uthappa, but fellow opener Rahul put together a fine knock and made up for the loss of production from the West Indies star, per cricket writer Ayaz Memon:

Kohli set a nice early pace for Kolkata, but AB de Villiers scored just four from six in a short cameo that lasted a little over two overs.

Kolkata were seemingly in control after the wickets of Rahul and De Villiers, but the hosts boosted their total in the final overs, with Shane Watson (34 from 21), Sachin Baby (16 from eight) and Stuart Binny (16 from four) adding some quick runs.

Morne Morkel was his usual, dominant self for Kolkata, finishing with figures of two for 28 in his four overs, but some of his fellow bowlers failed to find their form. Sunil Narine struggled in particular, as the spinner gave up 45 runs without taking a single wicket.

Per ESPNcricinfo’s Bharath Seervi, the Windies’ star has really struggled in his last outings:

Umesh Yadav gave up even more runs, but he also took the wicket of Binny. Kolkata gave up 73 runs in the final five overs, and the meltdown saw Bangalore finish their innings with a score of 185.

Kolkata suffered an immediate setback in the chase, as Uthappa was caught by Kohli in the first over. Bangalore's maligned bowling unit, which has held the team back tremendously throughout the 2016 IPL season, did a great job restricting Kolkata early, giving up just 59 runs through the first eight overs.

Gautam Gambhir (37 from 29) and Chris Lynn (15 from 12) couldn't keep up with Bangalore's high pace early, falling behind Royal Challengers' run rate in a hurry. At the midway point, the required run rate was almost 12.00.

Pathan and Andre Russell (39 from 24) were tasked with turning things around, but their first big over didn't arrive until the 15th, when they put up 18 runs. It signaled the start of a fantastic rally, however, with Pathan scoring an incredible 24 runs in the next over to push the required run rate to just 7.66.

Memon was impressed:

With 17 needed from the final two overs, Pathan launched a six to start the 19th, and he completed the chase with a single at the start of the final over.

Yuzvendra Chahal finished with figures of two for 27 to lead Bangalore's bowlers, but Watson and Tabraiz Shamsi both finished with economy rates over 12.50, giving up far too many runs in the final overs.

Per ESPNcricinfo, Kohli acknowledged a lack of composure in the final overs cost Bangalore: "Nothing much to say, we needed to take our chances. We let the game drift away. Composure with the ball was lacking."

Kolkata needed this win in the worst way, as the result keeps their play-off chances alive after a difficult stretch for team. Their depth with the bat is impressive, but the Knight Riders' struggles with the ball are a huge concern.

Bowling is the team's main strength, and when the likes of Narine and Yadav struggle, things tend to unravel quickly. If Kolkata are to have any chance of winning the title, those bowlers will have to rediscover their form in time for the play-offs.
