Chicago Cubs Dress in Eccentric 'Minimalist Zany' Suits for Pittsburgh Road Trip

Vanessa de BeaumontMay 2, 2016

In earning the current best record in the MLB, the Chicago Cubs have likely made themselves targets for the rest of the league.

By donning what manager Joe Maddon calls "minimalist zany" attire for the team's upcoming road trip to Pittsburgh, they may have made themselves targets for...well, just about everyone else.

"Not your typical Hugo Boss thing," the quirky club leader told the Chicago Tribune's Paul Skrbina when describing his vision for the flashy, multi-patterned suits. "Not Italian cut by any means."

And stay far away from traditional foreign fare they did. In fact, many of the players chose to utilize the fashion-defying opportunity to flaunt their domestic patriotism.

Mustaches, money, stars and bold geometric shapes also made for eye-catching prints—more of which can be found here.

"Part of it was we never get dressed up," said Maddon. "I didn't want it to be a conventional suit. That was my premise."

One glance at Clayton Richard as the Riddler, and it's clear that, as far as achieving his original goal, Maddon's plan has been a resounding success.

And there will be consequences for any player attempting to spoil that success—namely, by not sporting the outrageous pieces of tailoring.

"If you're at any time without part of your suit, it's a hundred-dollar fine, unless you're working out," Maddon told the Associated Press, via CBS Chicago.

Beige, black and navy fabrics be warned: The Cubs' apparel is officially a neutral-free zone.
