John Cena Returning, Eric Young Debuts and Top WWE News from Week of April 30

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 30, 2016

WWE Payback is Sunday, May 1. With only four weeks to set up storylines, WWE has done a good job making this an event fans want to see, especially when it comes to the feud between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.

Let's take a look at some of the bigger stories from the past week and the final card for Sunday's pay-per-view.

WWE Releases 2 Announcers

TOP NEWS

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

In a bit of sad news, WWE released Rich Brennan and Kyle Edwards this week. Many will remember Brennan served as the lead announcer for SmackDown for a short time, while Edwards did backstage interviews and hosted a few YouTube shows.

While neither was given much of a chance to succeed during his short tenure, neither seems to harbor bad feelings. Both took to Twitter to express how they are looking forward to what the future brings.

WWE recently hired Cathy Kelley, and Mauro Ranallo has become a fixture at the SmackDown announce table, so it shouldn't surprise anyone to see the company trimming a little fat.

Both Brennan and Edwards are talented in their field and will likely find some kind of work in the near future.

Another Former TNA Champion Debuts in NXT

There was a period several years ago when numerous former WWE champions jumped ship to TNA, but times have changed and the roles have reversed.

Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Austin Aries all made their WWE debuts in recent months after spending years working for Dixie Carter. Another TNA original made his NXT debut this week, when Eric Young surprised Joe during a promo in the ring.

Triple H posted a few photos of his first appearance at Full Sail University, and it looks like he will be lucky enough to keep his name, as Joe, Aries and Styles did, instead of having to change it like Finn Balor and Hideo Itami.

Young started out with TNA in 2004, but he left the company in early 2016 to pursue other opportunities, and WWE came calling.

We don't know the details of his contract yet, but if he has signed a multi-year deal, he will probably end up on the main roster before next year's WrestleMania.

WWE Stable Parts Ways

As seen during Thursday's episode of SmackDown, The League of Nations disbanded after several disagreements during a match with Kalisto, Sami Zayn and Cesaro.

The group recently kicked King Barrett to the curb, and it appears none of them will be teaming together in the near future.

Despite getting a win over The New Day at WrestleMania 32, the group of foreign Superstars never made much of an impact.

They were thrown together to give the four of them something to do until other opportunities opened up. We have seen this a million times. If a group doesn't come together organically, it won't last long.

It will be interesting to see whether any of them end up feuding or turning face in the near future. These are three talented competitors, so there is little doubt they will land on their feet.

John Cena Reveals Return Date

After months on the shelf and a current gig hosting American Grit, John Cena has revealed he will be returning to the ring on Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 30.

Cena's last appearance for the company was during WrestleMania 32 when he came out to help The Rock fend off The Wyatt Family.

He has been rehabbing an injury for several months, but this still puts him ahead of the original timetable for his return to the ring.

Cena has made a habit out of coming back from injuries ahead of schedule, and it speaks to his dedication and toughness. Maybe he is Super Cena after all.

Final WWE Payback Card

WWE Payback is set to take place on Sunday, May 1,. According to WWE.com, the following eight matches will make up the entire card.

  • Kalisto vs. Ryback (United States Championship)
  • Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose
  • Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
  • The Vaudevillains vs. Enzo Amore and Big Cass (No. 1 Contenders' match for the Tag Team Championships)
  • The Miz vs. Cesaro (Intercontinental Championship)
  • Charlotte vs. Natalya (Women's Championship)
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin
  • Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Ric Flair and Bret Hart will be accompanying Charlotte and Natalya for their showdown, so we can expect some kind of shenanigans outside the ring during that contest.

It's also safe to assume Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson will have some kind of impact on the outcome of the main event between Reigns and Styles.

Based on the potential this card has, Payback could end up being a more satisfying pay-per-view than WrestleMania 32 in the eyes of many fans.
