Joey Bosa to Chargers: Twitter Reacts as DE Is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Joseph ZuckerApr 28, 2016

After finishing 24th in sacks last year, the San Diego Chargers identified pass-rushing as their top priority in the 2016 NFL draft.

The Chargers selected Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa with the No. 3 overall pick Thursday:

In three years with the Buckeyes, Bosa collected 51 tackles for loss and 26 sacks. His trademark shrugging celebration became an all-too-common occurrence for his Big Ten opponents.

Bosa is widely considered to be the best defensive end available and one of the top pass-rushers. Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson believed it was the first major surprise of the night:

According to The MMQB's Robert Klemko, the Chargers have been targeting Bosa for a while:

ESPN.com's Bill Barnwell thought that put some of his predraft behavior in perspective:

Here's how social media reacted to the selection:

The immediate question is where the Buckeyes star fits in San Diego's 3-4 defense since he projected to be more of a 4-3 DE. Instead, he'll likely line up as an outside linebacker for the Chargers, which will be an interesting experiment.

Bosa could potentially be one San Diego's best edge defenders right out of the gate and give the team a great 1-2 combo. Melvin Ingram led the team in sacks (10.5) last year, and Pro Football Focus graded him the 16th-best edge defender (84.3) in the league last year.

Some will question whether the Chargers should've gone for an offensive tackle instead, especially with every lineman available with the third overall pick. Others might argue Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey was the smarter pick.

Even if Bosa doesn't become a J.J. Watt-caliber pass-rusher, he should at the least become a productive defensive end/hybrid linebacker for years to come. His combination of strength (269 lbs) and technique will allow him to make an immediate impact for his new team.
