Thursday Recap

Schwartzman showed no mercy to Tomic in Istanbul as he powered past the highly regarded Australian, 6-2, 6-2. The diminutive 23-year-old South American finished the game off in just over an hour, sending the No. 1 seed packing.

Tennis TV provided evidence of the winner’s dominance against Tomic, as the Aussie failed to deal with his opponent’s return of serve:

Tomic never looked in the match and surrendered the first set with little resistance. He could only manage to win 47 per cent of points on his first serve as Schwartzman was perfect from the baseline at the opposite end of the court.

The second set followed suit as Tomic waved goodbye to the Turkish crowd at the country's first-ever ATP World event tournament.

Schwartzman now meets Dzumhur in the quarter-final after the Bosnian defeated Illya Marchenko in three sets.

Dzumhur was convincing in the first, taking the advantage, 6-3, but the Ukrainian star struck back to win the second set, 7-5.

Despite the brief comeback, Dzumhur grabbed his place in the next round, winning the third and final set, 6-3.

Karlovic edged a tight contest against Lajovic to also progress, winning by the slimmest of margins, 7-6, 7-6.

The Istanbul Open highlighted a milestone for the victor who progressed to the last eight of the tournament:

In Thursday's other matches in Turkey, Dzumhur was in impressive form against Marchenko, booking his place in the latter stages, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Seeded Granollers struggled at times against Chung in the final match of the day but prevailed, 6-4, 6-4, in his second-round encounter.

Schwartzman was unseeded going into the action, but the young player now has a valid claim on a spot in the final. Tomic was a hot favourite against him but failed to deliver the goods when he needed it most.
