Real Madrid Transfer Rumours: Latest on James Rodriguez Amid United Rumours

Rory MarsdenApr 27, 2016

James Rodriguez has reportedly reached "breaking point" as he continues to be overlooked by Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

According to Sport, the Colombian star's agent, Jorge Mendes, is now "looking for another team" for his client after Zidane chose not to play James at all in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with Manchester City, despite the absence of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Ronaldo was absent from the squad for the key semi-final first leg against City—which ended 0-0 at the Etihad—and Benzema was forced off injured at half-time, but Rodriguez, 24, still remained an unused substitute as Zidane opted to use Jese and Isco from the bench instead.

James has been unsettled all season at Real—even under former boss Rafael Benitez—and rumours have continued to circulate linking him with Manchester United, per Marca (h/t Metro's Sean Kearns).

Bleacher Report's Dean Jones believes he could be a good fit at Old Trafford, but he also suggested Paris Saint-Germain as a potential destination should he leave Madrid:

It seems that James could be past the point of no return at Real now having dropped down the pecking order so drastically after a terrific debut season in 2014-15 following his big-money move from Monaco.

During the last campaign, he was a key part of Carlo Ancelotti's side, making 29 appearances in La Liga—for 2,290 minutes of play—and netting 13 goals while providing the same number of assists, per WhoScored.com.

With only three games remaining of the current La Liga campaign, he has played just 1,310 minutes in La Liga—netting seven goals and providing seven assists—while his Champions League action has been cut from 705 minutes in 2014-15 to just 242 in the current campaign.

It seems as though James is not part of Zidane's first-team plans, and with the Frenchman unlikely to leave the club this summer, having only been appointed in January, Rodriguez's future at the Bernabeu does not look good.

Per AFP's Kieran Canning, under Ancelotti, James was one of Real's most influential players:

He undoubtedly has the talent to return to the form that saw him light up the 2014 World Cup and excel in his first season at Real, and at just 24, he could even reach a higher peak than he has previously.

But it looks as though he will have to do it away from the Bernabeu.

A switch to United could be ideal, as they are currently lacking an attacking star of James' profile, while he could also slot in well at PSG with Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely set to leave in the summer.
