Juan Mata Says Footballers Are Paid Too Much and That He Would Accept a Pay Cut

Tom WebbApr 25, 2016

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has had his say on the debate regarding footballers' wages by expressing his disdain for the financial aspects of the sport.

"I don't enjoy the business side of football," he said in a Spanish television interview (via Sky Sports). "I love the game. I love training and competing. I'd take a pay cut if there was less business involvement in the sport."

Mata went on to compare his own wage with that of the average person and admitted the difference is too much.

"Football is very well remunerated at this level. It's like we live in a bubble. Compared to the rest of society, we earn a ridiculous amount. It's unfathomable. With respect to the world of football, I earn a normal wage. But compared to 99.9 percent of Spain and the rest of the world, I earn a silly amount."
