Jaylen Kelly-Powell to Michigan: Wolverines Land 4-Star Safety Prospect

Safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell is headed to the Michigan Wolverines after the 4-star prospect fielded offers from some of the nation's most prestigious programs during the recruiting process.

Kelly-Powell made the decision official with an announcement Tuesday on Twitter:

The 6'0", 180-pound safety is the 269th-ranked player overall, per Scout's rankings, but he grades out No. 23 overall among all players at his position in the class of 2017. The Detroit native also clocked in as the top-ranked player at his position in the state of Michigan and the No. 1 safety in the Midwest region. 

Kelly-Powell isn't the most physically imposing safety, so it will be interesting to see how he's deployed at the collegiate level. 

With 4.45-second 40-yard-dash speed, per Scout, Kelly-Powell generally looked more like a cornerback from a physical standpoint during his evolution in high school. 

Scout's official analysis of Kelly-Powell noted he "can play man to man and has been out on an island at cornerback before" thanks to his ability to stay disciplined in coverage and change direction with relative ease. 

Although he's far from the hardest hitter, Kelly-Powell's versatility should be his greatest asset as he transitions to life in a college secondary.

With the agility necessary to cover ground as a ball-hawking safety and the polish in short areas to serve as a corner when necessary, Kelly-Powell should have no problem being deployed in a variety of roles in head coach Jim Harbaugh's versatile scheme.
