The Rock also took to Instagram, thanking Time for recognizing his accomplishments:

Indian tennis player Sania Mirza tweeted:

All of the athletes included excelled in their respective fields, but they were also influential.

Ballerina Misty Copeland wrote this on the NBA's reigning MVP:

"

My definition of a role model is someone who maximizes their potential to push the boundaries of their circumstances with passion, purpose, integrity and the sensitivity to know they are setting an example for others along the way. Stephen Curry is a true role model. I can relate to his underdog story. He is showing us all how through belief in yourself, hard work and dedication, it is possible to achieve your dreams, prove your doubters wrong and go from an underdog to a Warrior. Lucky for us, he's just getting started.

"

Actress, writer and producer Tina Fey offered this on Rousey:

"

Imagine if we could teach our daughters to value their bodies for what they can do, not for how others think they look. Could Ronda be the one to finally help us understand that as females, we define the word "feminine," and that it doesn't define us? If we don't listen, can she dislocate our arms at the elbow?

Last year, when Ronda suffered her first-ever UFC loss at the hands (and feet) of Holly Holm, her detractors rejoiced. But Ronda will be back. "Everybody has losses in their life, but I choose to always be undefeated."

"

The Time 100 was first published in 1999, and it has recognized those who have made significant global contributions on a yearly basis since 2004.

While the likes of The Rock, Curry, Rousey and golfer Jordan Spieth resonate with most Americans whether they are sports fans or not, others who made the list, such as Mirza, swimmer Katie Ledecky, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, may not be household names in the United States.
