Padres Single-A Affiliate to Host Home Run Derby on Retired Aircraft Carrier

It's about time someone held a home run derby on a historic aircraft carrier.

The Lake Elsinore Storm will be the first to do so this summer on the USS Midway in the Port of San Diego.

Hitters will take their cuts 243 feet from the boat's bow and will mash an "estimated total of 150 balls into San Diego Bay," per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Eight players will swing for the fences—er, water—in three rounds of single-elimination, head-to-head competitions. They'll get 15 hacks each round.

Volunteers from Outdoor Outreach will man the water on Jet Skis, paddleboards and kayaks to retrieve the dingers.

The event will take place on June 20 as part of the California League-Carolina League All-Star festivities.
