Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Andre Gomes, Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rumours

Matt JonesApr 14, 2016

Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes is reportedly poised to follow Jose Mourinho to Manchester United next season.

According to Calciomercato (h/t Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star) the player and the manager both share the same agent in Jorge Mendes, and he’s promised Mourinho that Gomes will head to Old Trafford should he get the nod to take over from Louis van Gaal this summer.

It’s suggested that Juventus are also interested in the elegant midfielder, who has been an occasional bright spot in a disappointing campaign for Los Che. Here’s what he can offer:

Mark Ogden of the Independent has reported it’s not clear whether Mourinho will move to United or not yet, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen on him and the Red Devils undecided on Van Gaal.

Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Jack Staplehurst of the Daily Express) thinks it’ll be Ryan Giggs getting the job at Old Trafford.

Assuming he does get the job, Gomes would be a wonderful first signing for Mourinho. As the above clip illustrates, the Portuguese is a player that’s so easy on the eye, capable of floating past opposition defenders with his brilliant balance.

If there’s one concern, it’d be over the 22-year-old’s apparent lack of appetite for the physical battle. It’s something Sport Witness suggested may prevent United from going after the player:

Nevertheless, Gomes is still young, still learning and after a season in which he’s seen oscillations in both form and fitness, he will be a much more mature presence next term. His adaptability, flair and willingness to commit opponents in the middle of the field is something United have lacked in 2015-16, too, with their attacking play often pedestrian.

It’s what could give Gomes an edge over a player like Juan Mata or Ander Herrera, neither of whom possess that burst with the ball at their feet to take them past defenders. If Mourinho was to get Gomes at United next season, he could channel the youngster’s attributes and be in possession of a very fine player.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Hints at Premier League Move

Paris Saint-Germain’s virtuoso striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed he will leave the French capital at the end of the campaign and teased a possible move to the Premier League, with Manchester United said to be keen.

“This is my last season [in Paris]? That you know already?” was the 34-year-old’s response when asked about his future, per Jack Gaughan of the MailOnline. “You are very curious. I have won a lot of trophies but I still want to win a lot more. I want to do it wherever I can.”

When asked about English clubs offering him a deal, Ibrahimovic responded “I have had lots [of offers].”

Although he’s in the twilight of a tremendous career, the Sweden international would still be box-office viewing in the Premier League. Here’s a look at what he’s still capable of:

United, who Gaughan noted are interested in the player, would be an ideal destination for Ibrahimovic. Old Trafford has always loved characters who may be a little arrogant at times in their playing style but can back it up with their end product; think Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ibrahimovic is a player who ticks those boxes, and as is evident by his goalscoring record this term, he is still one of the deadliest finishers in world football, per Sky Sports Statto:

The Red Devils are renowned for giving young players a chance, and as effective as Ibrahimovic remains, it’d be understandable if some at the club did have concerns about him taking crucial playing time away from the likes of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard or Marcus Rashford.

But for young players like those aforementioned, working alongside Ibrahimovic in training every day for around two years is only going to be beneficial.

After all, for all his bravado, the Swede is a wonderful centre-forward and a serial winner in many different divisions across the continent. That kind of influence will only serve to lift standards at a club that’s lost its edge in recent years.
