Latest on Johnny Manziel's Living Status After Comments Made to TMZ

Tyler ConwayApr 11, 2016

Johnny Manziel continues to prepare for an NFL return, but recent comments about his living status have been a topic of conversation after he told TMZ Sports he was staying with Von Miller in Los Angeles.

"I'm living out here with my guy, Von Miller. Everybody knows Von Miller. Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller, my brother. I'm living with him right now," Manziel said Saturday. "We're getting our lives together, bro."

Miller took to Instagram to make light of the story:

ESPN.com reported on Monday, though, that Manziel is living with suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, not Miller. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on Tuesday that Manziel is not, in fact, living with Gordon.

Manziel, 23, was released by the Browns on March 11 after two wildly disappointing seasons. Taken No. 22 overall in 2014, Manziel threw for 1,675 yards and seven touchdowns against as many interceptions during his time in Cleveland. He made just eight starts, and the Manziel era will be better known for his off-field troubles than his on-field accomplishments.

In January 2015, Manziel checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic for alcohol-abuse problems. That came after years of well-documented incidents involving alcohol, most notably a 2012 arrest that nearly derailed his career at Texas A&M.

Manziel, after a brief period of sobriety, has been shown on many different occasions drinking alcohol. He was benched by then-Browns head coach Mike Pettine last season after video surfaced of him partying during the team's bye week—something he attempted to cover up. Patrons also spotted him drinking in Las Vegas the night before Cleveland's final regular-season game despite his being under concussion protocol.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with partying, bro," Manziel told TMZ Sports. "There's a difference between partying and being out of control."

The Browns waived Manziel a little more than a month after police investigated an alleged domestic violence incident involving the Heisman Trophy winner and his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

Former NFL general manager Bill Polian doesn't believe teams are so sold:

Gordon, 24, has served multiple NFL suspensions after violating the league's substance-abuse policy. He was banned two games in 2013, 10 in 2014 and the entire season in 2015. After Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo reported Monday that the former Baylor star failed another drug test, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reported Tuesday that the NFL had denied Gordon's reinstatement. His status with the Browns remains unclear.

Miller, who teamed with Manziel at Texas A&M, has been a public advocate for his friend. He's called on his own quarterback-needy Denver Broncos to give Manziel a chance, though his reported living situation isn't going to help matters.
