Arsenal Transfer News: Theo Walcott Cited Among 10 Names in Summer Cull Rumours

Rory MarsdenApr 11, 2016

Arsenal could reportedly offload as many as 10 players in the summer transfer window, including Theo WalcottAlex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud.

According to Football Insider's Wayne Veysey, Gunners sources also named goalkeeper David Ospina and centre-back Per Mertesacker among the group potentially departing, along with full-backs Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuchy.

The report also confirmed the widely-rumoured suspicion that midfield trio Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky will all be let go when their contracts expire in the summer.

Arsenal are set for another disappointing season in the Premier League with Dean Jones predicting a third-place finish following Saturday's 3-3 draw with West Ham United:

Manager Arsene Wenger needs to make significant changes in the summer if Arsenal are to break their 12-year title drought next season, and it seems the Gunners are preparing to do just that.

Walcott has endured a mixed campaign during 2015-16. He started the term well but has faded dramatically and has scored only twice in the Premier League in 2016, per WhoScored.com.

Now 27 years old, Walcott's inconsistency is a genuine weakness in his game, and patience has clearly now worn thin at Arsenal with the England international.

The same is seemingly true of Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has not advanced as many people expected, and Arsenal are preparing for the 22-year-old now to leave amid interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool, per Veysey.

The emergence of Alex Iwobi in recent weeks has provided even more competition for Oxlade-Chamberlain in the Arsenal squad, and he may now never break back into the side.

Giroud has similar inconsistency problems to Walcott and is not clinical enough in front of goal to be deemed a world-class striker, per analytics site 11tegen11:

If Arsenal are to win the Premier League again, they need a striker who can guarantee around 20 goals a season.

The 29-year-old Giroud's best ever return in a Premier League season was 16 goals in 2013-14, per WhoScored

He remains a very good striker and could likely command a significant transfer fee, which would aid Arsenal in their quest to purchase a top-class forward who could get them the goals they need for title glory.
