IPL Results 2016: Knight Riders vs. Daredevils Score, Updated Table, Schedule

Gianni VerschuerenApr 10, 2016

Kolkata Knight Riders got their Indian Premier League campaign off on the right foot, beating Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens by nine wickets (with 35 balls remaining).

Led by Andre Russell and his three early wickets, Kolkata's bowlers dominated the Daredevils, holding them to a total of just 98 and ending their innings in the 18th over.

Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir took care of the bulk of the chase, as the opening pair put up 69 runs before Uthappa was caught. Kolkata cruised to the win from that point, getting the job done inside 15 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Delhi Daredevils

Kolkata: 99/1 (Gambhir 38, Hogg 3-19) beat Delhi: 98 (De Kock 17, Mishra 1-11) by nine wickets (with 35 balls remaining).

Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl, looking to put early pressure on the Daredevils' batsmen. Mayank Agarwal lasted just nine balls before he was caught by Brad Hogg, and Quinton de Kock didn't fare any better, scoring 17 from 10 before he was caught by Yusuf Pathan.

Shreyas Iyer went for a duck, and Karun Nair added just three runs to the total before he too found himself caught.

Cricket writer Peter Miller couldn't help but take a shot at Delhi:

With four wickets gone and almost no runs on the board before the end of the sixth over, the situation looked dire for Delhi, and they were forced to aggressively chase runs and take risks the rest of the way. That played right into Kolkata's hands, and the Knight Riders continued their bowling onslaught and only allowed three more batsmen to score double-digit runs.

Sanju Samson (15 from 13), Pawan Negi (11 from 19) and Chris Morris (11 from nine) were all undone by their aggressive approach, and ICC World Twenty20 hero Carlos Brathwaite faced just four balls before his knock came to an end.

The Daredevils were all out in the 18th over for a score of just 98, and per cricket writer Mohandas Menon, they hold the dubious honour of leading all IPL franchises in sub-100 totals, by some distance:

Russell (3-24) set the pace early for Kolkata with three timely wickets, while Hogg finished with fantastic figures of 3-19. John Hastings (2-6) was nearly perfect, finishing with an economy rate of 2.25. Russell's economy rate of 8.00 was the highest of all Kolkata bowlers.

Few doubted the hosts would chase down the target of 99, and Uthappa (35 from 33) and Gambhir (unbeaten 38) got things started on the right foot, scoring 20 runs in the first two overs.

As shared by ESPN Cricinfo's Bharath Seervi, the duo became the IPL's second most-prolific opening pair in IPL history during the fourth over:

Per Menon, Uthappa added another mark to his impressive resume:

Uthappa and Gambhir were in no rush to chase boundaries, and the pairing lasted until the 10th over, when the former was caught by Morris. Manish Pandey replaced the 30-year-old, and he and Gambhir continued their patient knock until the latter sealed the deal in the 15th over.

Amit Mishra led the way for Delhi's bowlers with figures of 1-11, but the group stood no chance defending a total of just 98.

As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, Delhi's Zaheer Khan hopes the one-sided loss can be a learning experience for his side:

"

You learn every day. I was trying to swing the ball too much. I was playing after a long time. I was happy to see the effort of the fast bowlers. Every team is going to have one bad game, hopefully we've got that out of the way. We're just giving our young batting line-up freedom. They are quick learners, they've got the energy. We are happy with our plans and preparation. It's just about letting this team express themselves on the field freely.

"

The 2014 champions disappointed during last year's IPL, failing to make it out of the group stage, but Kolkata's bowling once again looks on point, and that's what led them to the 2014 title.

With Mumbai Indians looking pedestrian in their first match and Chennai Super Kings not participating due to suspension, Kolkata have to be considered the early favourites to win this year's IPL, particularly if their bowling holds up.
