Manchester United Transfer News: Harry Kane Advised on Move by Teddy Sheringham

Rory MarsdenApr 10, 2016

Teddy Sheringham has warned Harry Kane he could miss his opportunity to move to Manchester United or Real Madrid if he turns them down in the coming summer transfer window.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker is enjoying a stellar season and has played a key role in Spurs' title push. Per the Mail on Sunday's Martha Kelner, United are expected to go in for him in the summer. Former Red Devils and Spurs striker Sheringham, relayed by Kelner, urged Kane to at least consider a move:

"

I’m sure there are top clubs looking at him and they’d be prepared to break the bank just because of the way he plays and the way he wants to score goals every time he gets the ball.

Should he move right now? I don’t know. Timing’s a funny thing in football because you have to take the opportunity when it arises. If you don’t, another striker might go to United or Real Madrid or whoever we’re talking about and you won’t get the chance again for another four or five years.

You’ve only got a period of about 12 years in professional football and when these things come along you have to take tough decisions. Sometimes they feel right and you have to go with the flow.

Kane, 22, will come up against United on Sunday at White Hart Lane in a must-win game for the hosts as they look to keep pace with Premier League leaders Leicester City.

Sitting in second, Spurs could be 10 points back from the Foxes before they kick off against United as Claudio Ranieri’s side play struggling Sunderland earlier in the day.

Kane will be the key man for Spurs if they are to pick up all three points against Louis van Gaal’s side, the Englishman having reached 22 goals for the Premier League term with six strikes in his last four appearances, per WhoScored.com.

Unlike Spurs, United have endured a mixed campaign and are struggling to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

However, they remain one of the world's biggest clubs both in respect to profile and finances and would be able to offer Kane attractive terms to move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are crying out for a striker as clinical as Kane, as goalscoring has been a consistent problem for United since Van Gaal took over as manager in the summer of 2014, an opinion shared by football writer Daniel Storey:

Wayne Rooney has been sidelined through injury recently, but he was far from prolific before picking up his knock, netting just seven times in 22 league appearances, per WhoScored.com

Anthony Martial, 20, looks a star of the future and could form a devastating partnership with Kane should United sign the England international.

Despite their recent poor form, United's ambitions remain lofty. Bleacher Report's Dean Jones is among those who believe they would become a more attractive proposition to transfer targets if, as has been widely rumoured, Jose Mourinho takes over as manager in the summer:

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has built an excellent team at Spurs, and the fact they are competing for the title and set to be in the Champions League next season means they are less likely than ever to lose their major stars to bigger clubs—they have seen Gareth Bale and Luka Modric join Real in recent years.

However, as Sheringham noted, opportunities to join the biggest clubs in the world do not come around often. Kane could be tempted by a switch to United if the Manchester outfit makes a bold move for him this summer.
