Stanley Cup Playoffs 2016: Updated Standings, Bracket and Top Must-See Games

Steve SilvermanApr 8, 2016

With one full weekend to go in the NHL regular season, not one of the first-round playoff matchups is set.

Fourteen of the 16 playoff berths have been clinched, and the final spots will be determined on Saturday or perhaps Sunday.

The Detroit Red Wings are currently holding on to seventh spot in the Atlantic Division, and if they remain there, they will face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. The Boston Bruins, who hammered the Red Wings Thursday night at home, 5-2, are currently in the second wild-card spot and would face the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals in the first round.

The Philadelphia Flyers are currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in after dropping a 4-3 decision at home to the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night, but they control their own destiny despite being in ninth place in the standings. If they beat the streaking Pittsburgh Penguins at home Saturday and the New York Islanders on the road Sunday, they will get into the playoffs.

Based on the way they played against the Maple Leafs, that won't happen, but Wayne Simmonds scored a huge goal with 57 seconds remaining that allowed them to tie the score, send the game into overtime and pick up one point in the standings. If they had lost in regulation, the Flyers would not remain in control of their own destiny.

If the Red Wings can rebound from their loss in Boston and win in Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers in regulation or overtime, they will clinch the third-place spot regardless of Boston's result at home against Ottawa.

However, if the Bruins win in regulation or overtime and the Red Wings win in a shootout or lose, the Bruins will finish third.

''All we can really do is worry about us, and hopefully it works out,'' Bruins winger Brad Marchand told the media after the game, per Kyle Hightower of the Associated Press.

If the Flyers fail to bypass either the Bruins or Red Wings in points this weekend, they will fall short of the playoffs.

While those two spots in the East are the only ones that have not been clinched, playoff positioning is an issue throughout the league.

The New York Islanders and New York Rangers both have 99 points and are tied for third place in the Metropolitan Division. While the Rangers have their Saturday game against the Red Wings, the Islanders have two games remaining with Buffalo and Philadelphia.

The Islanders are currently ahead of the Rangers because they have a game in hand, but if the two teams remain tied, the Rangers will have the edge thanks to a 42-40 edge in ROW (regulation and overtime wins). But if the Islanders can gain one more point in their two games than the Rangers get against the Red Wings, they will clinch third place and play the Penguins in the first round.

That would put the Rangers in the playoffs as the first wild-card team and pit them against the Florida Panthers in the playoffs, who have clinched first place in the Atlantic Division.

While all the Western Conference playoff spots have been clinched, the matchups are still to be decided.

The Stars are gunning for the top spot in the Western Conference.

The Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues both have 107 points and sit atop the Central Division. The Stars have a 47-44 edge in ROW and will earn the top spot in the Western Conference playoffs if the two teams remain tied at the end of the weekend. Both teams have one game remaining, with the Stars hosting the Nashville Predators and the Blues hosting Washington.

While Dallas would appear to have the easier matchup, the Blues still have hope. The winner of the division will face the Minnesota Wild in the first round, while the loser will square off with the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

The Los Angeles Kings won a showdown with the Anaheim Ducks Thursday night at the Staples Center, and that 2-1 victory gave them 101 points and a two-point edge over their crosstown rivals. If the Kings beat Winnipeg Saturday (in any manner), they will clinch the division. If they don't, the Ducks have two games remaining (at Colorado and at Washington) and could bypass them.

The Kings are thrilled that they control their own destiny. ''That's what you want,'' defenseman Drew Doughty said after the game, per Greg Beacham of the Associated Press. ''You don't want to be relying on other teams to beat other teams, and other teams to lose. We've relied on other teams before, and it didn't go so well for us. "
