Masters Odds 2016: Latest Vegas Lines for Underrated Sleepers in the Field

Danny WebsterApr 5, 2016

Since 2011, the Masters has been a tournament of unexpected results.

Phil Mickelson won his third green jacket in 2010. Since that time, four of the next five winners at Augusta National donned the coveted green jacket for the first time in their careers. One of those winners was Bubba Watson, who won twice in three years this decade.

The focus of this year's Masters will be on the favorites—Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and reigning champion Jordan Spieth—but there are some men to look out for who will be flying under the radar come this Sunday, both on the golf course and in the sportsbook.

Here's a breakdown of the latest lines from Vegas for some of the golfers who could make some noise this weekend.

Rickie Fowler

Could this be the year Rickie Fowler breaks through and wins his first career major?

No one has been closer to winning a major in the last two years than Fowler. After two second-placers and one third-place finish in 2014, Fowler finally tasted victory by winning The Players Championship—his first win in three years—and the Scottish Open in 2015.

It seems like Fowler is right on the cusp of finally breaking through the glass ceiling. He's improved leaps and bounds over the last three years. Not only has he improved in his overall golf game, but his greens in regulation have been the glaring improvement early on in 2016, per Will Gray of Golf Channel:

Fowler has always been the guy who's come close yet so far. All he needs is one major victory to establish himself as one of the top golfers in the game. He's no longer the most overrated player PGA players once voted him as.

And if that label still exists, it won't after a win at Augusta.

Dustin Johnson

The powerful Dustin Johnson is another name to keep an eye on when it comes to long drives and accuracy on a course that could result in soft greens this weekend.

Johnson came close to winning the U.S. Open last year, only to come up short. This could be the year Johnson finally scratches the surface and wins his first major.

The key for him to get that far, however, will be if he can get off to a fast start. Johnson has started off well at majors, per Golf Channel, but it's been sustaining that fast start by the weekend that has proved to be an issue for him:

Johnson has yet to win multiple events in a year, but it'd be safe to bet if he only won once in 2016, getting that victory at Augusta would be worthwhile.

Phil Mickelson

Another prime opportunity presents itself in front of Lefty once again at Augusta.

With Tiger Woods out of the picture, Phil Mickelson becomes the elder statesman of the Masters this year. Not only that, but Mickelson has a chance to become a four-time green jacket winner. Mickelson's performance at Augusta has gone two ways the last five years: really good or really bad.

He's finished 25th or worse in three of the last five years. Those other two times have come with Mickelson finishing in the top five.

Mickelson has had a strong start to 2016, and that tends to bode well for him when entering Augusta, per Justin Ray of Golf Channel:

All eyes will be on the youngsters at Augusta, but don't be surprised if Mickelson is in the thick of things come Sunday.
