Novak Djokovic vs. Tomas Berdych: Score, Reaction from 2016 Miami Open

Alec NathanMar 30, 2016

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic clinched a semifinal date with David Goffin at the Miami Open thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 win over seventh-ranked Tomas Berdych on Wednesday evening in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Djokovic has ripped off 10 straight wins against Berdych and is 23-2 all-time against the Czech star, according to the ATP's official website. Djokovic is now looking for his second straight singles title and third overall this year after emerging victorious at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, and January's Australian Open.

The tournament's top seed opened Wednesday's proceedings with a hold on serve and a subsequent break on Berdych's first service game of the match, but the first set was hardly a cakewalk.

Berdych broke back during Djokovic's second service game and consistently made Djokovic scramble into the alley as he played beautiful angles with crosscourt forehands throughout the opening frame. But despite his brief success, Berdych couldn't break through, as ESPN's Brad Gilbert explained:

TennisTV on Twitter relayed one of Berdych's more impressive points of the first set before Djokovic pulled away:

Berdych flashed a more consistent first serve throughout the first set, according to TennisTV, but a slew of unforced errors put him at a supreme disadvantage:

Berdych also struggled mightily to convert second-serve opportunities, as Gilbert noted, and that was clear when he double-faulted to open the second set:

Leading by a set and a break, Djokovic cruised to a straight-set victory and set up a semifinal date with Goffin, who took care of Gilles Simon 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 earlier Wednesday.

Goffin has come on strong over the past few weeks and will be making his second straight semifinal appearance after bowing out against Milos Raonic in the semis at the BNP Paribas Open, but Djokovic shouldn't be concerned.

The world's top-ranked player has yet to drop a set at the Miami Open, and he hasn't played a three-set match since squaring off against Bjorn Fratangelo in the second round at Indian Wells.

Djokovic is also 3-0 all-time against Goffin, with his most recent victory over the Belgian coming on hard court at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Cincinnati.

"I have nothing to lose," Goffin said, according to the Miami Herald's Michelle Kaufman. "He won almost everything this year. He’s playing unbelievable tennis at the moment. But I played a great match against him last year in Cincinnati, and it could be interesting to watch the match."

Goffin did steal a set in their last meeting, but doing so this time around will be a daunting task given the way Djokovic has been shredding opponents with his unmatched tactical prowess.

Post-Match Reaction

"This was overall from the first to the last point the best match I've played of the tournament, and it comes at the right stage of the event," Djokovic said, according to the Associated Press' Steven Wine (via Yahoo Sports).

The ATP World Tour on YouTube shared some of Djokovic's other post-match thoughts:

"If I may say, I do feel better this year than I had felt last year at the very same stage of the season," Djokovic added, according to tennis.com's Nina Pantic. "That definitely satisfies me, and I’m hoping I can continue on and keep the same trajectory."
