Dear Daniel Synder: It's Time For a Change

Mark NamanSep 28, 2009

One could argue for many changes to improve the Redskins. The top two that seem to surface are Jason Campbell and Jim Zorn.  But the change needs to start with YOU.

The Redskins need a new owner.

Through your own success and hard work, you've been provided with one of the greatest opportunities in sports for non-athletes, a chance to own your favorite sports franchise. That's a dream come true. But the dream should not end there.  The dream should end with one or more Super Bowl wins.

There is no doubt you are an excellent businessman. You've proven that outside of the NFL, and with the Redskins. You improved the franchise value and turned large profits.  But are you a great leader?

Great leaders know their limits. They leverage their strengths and find great people to handle the tasks for which they are ill equipped.  It's clear you are not a "football guy", you're a fan.  It's time to let go of the reigns and let some great football minds run the Redskins.

The formula for success should be: hire well and take a step back.

Stop going after the shiny new toy. Stop overspending on big names. Find football executives that have studied and worked in the game, that have learned from other successful franchises, and give them the room to succeed.

The Redskins need a new owner.

This storied franchise expects greatness, and yet the record under your ownership is less than .500 (77-86). The number of free agent flops is too large to list. The coaching moves have been a failure.

Redskins fans love their 'Skins. We live for beating Dallas and winning Super Bowls. The fans, the players, and the organization need a change, and they need it now.  Can you lead that change?

The way I see it, there are two options.

You could sell the team. I doubt you'll do that given your professed love for the Redskins. However, if you did, you'd make a profit and there would be no shame in walking away realizing you were not cut out to be an NFL owner.

Or, you could change. Change the way you run things. Stop playing with the squad like it's your own personal Fantasy Football team. Change your involvement in the operations of the team. Hire the right people and let them turn us into a winner.  Follow the path of those franchises that succeed consistently in the NFL in this day and age.

The Redskins need a new owner. Can you become that owner?
