Carter Signs with Jets

Saturday, April 2

Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday reported Carter signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets. Connor Hughes of USA Today confirmed the report.

Both Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater reported Carter's meeting with the Jets on March 30.

While Carter's stock has fallen, he'll be a good addition for the Jets. He has experience in a 3-4 defensive scheme from his time with the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, some might argue his best years came before Monte Kiffin brought his 4-3 defense to the Cowboys in 2013. Before that, he was drawing comparisons to Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks.

That's not to say Carter will suddenly start playing at an All-Pro level, but the Jets defense should be a good fit for his skill set. In addition, New York wouldn't be paying him to be a starting linebacker, thus the level of scrutiny won't be as high as he experienced with the Bucs.

Carter Struggled to Impress in 2015

This time last year, Carter and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms on a four-year, $17 million contract. The Bucs released him just one season into the deal.

Carter's 47 combined tackles were his fewest since his rookie season in 2011, when he played in just 10 games, and Pro Football Focus gave him a 49.1 overall grade, which was 68th-best at his position in 2015. Kwon Alexander beat him out for the starting middle linebacker job before the start of the regular season.

While he's coming off a poor showing, Carter is a veteran linebacker capable of contributing to the Jets' defense.
