Martin Emerges as Top Candidate
Wednesday, April 6
Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle reported California head coach Cuonzo Martin has emerged as the top candidate Georgia Tech would like to reach a deal with.
Capel Withdraws from Coaching Search
Sunday, April 3
Gary Parrish of CBS Sports reported Duke assistant Jeff Capel "removed his name from consideration" for Georgia Tech's open coaching vacancy. On March 28, Parrish reported the Yellow Jackets' interest in Capel.
At the time, Zach Klein of WSB-TV in Atlanta reported the five-year assistant to five-time national champion head coach Mike Krzyzewski was Tech's “No. 1 candidate."
This isn't the first time Capel has backed out of a search for a head coaching gig. Per Parrish, he removed himself from consideration for the Arizona State job last offseason, proving his patience in seeking the right opportunity.
Capel has head coaching experience at Virginia Commonwealth (2002-2006) and Oklahoma (2006-2011), where he compiled a collective record of 162-110.
The seasoned coach also brings a recruiting pedigree, having landed Blake Griffin while at OU and Jabari Parker, Justise Winslow and Jahlil Okafor at Duke.
Next Head Coach Will Inherit Young Roster
The Yellow Jackets moved on from Gregory on March 25, via Jeff Fischel of the ACC Digital Network:
Four of Tech's five starters in 2015-16 were seniors, which means the next head coach will take the reins of an inexperienced team in an uphill climb in the competitive ACC.
Gregory finished 21-15 this year and reached the postseason (the NIT) for the first time since 2010—and that wasn’t good enough to buy him at least one more year. The new Georgia Tech basketball coach will be expected to produce quickly.
