Antoine Demoitie, Cyclist, Dies After Crash with Race Motorcycle
Cyclist Antoine Demoitie, 25, has died after being hospitalized following a crash during the 2016 Gent-Wevelgem, confirmed police, via the AFP News Agency.
According to Agence France-Presse (via Richard Windsor of Cycling Weekly), a race motorcycle ran over Demoitie after he fell off his bike. Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert, for whom Demoitie rides, confirmed earlier on Sunday he was in intensive care.
The AFP reported the crash occurred in Sainte-Marie-Cappel, France, as the race crossed over from Belgium, and medical personnel transported Demoitie to nearby Lille.
Demoitie recently competed in the one-day E3 Harelbeke, finishing in 69th place. It was his first race on the 2016 UCI WorldTour.
BBC Sport reported Jens Debusschere was also hospitalized Sunday after he suffered a concussion in a separate crash.
