The South Florida heat got to Nadal and forced the world No. 5 to retire for the first time in six years.

Trailing 2-0 in the third set, Nadal felt dizzy and needed to get his blood pressure checked, per Tennis Now:

He was visibly worn down as he headed to the bench before leaving a game later, per Tennis Now:

It was the second time the Spaniard called for a doctor during the match, according to Piers Newbery of BBC Sport, and the 29-year-old star said he felt his safety was on the line:

"

Everything was fine until the end of the first set.

I started to feel not very good, it was getting worse and worse and worse. In the second set I [realized] that I was not able to keep playing. I tried to resist but I got a little bit scared to be too dizzy.

I wanted to finish the match but I seriously couldn’t.

"

Nadal hadn’t retired from a match since his 2010 Australian Open quarterfinal against Murray.

Fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka was also eliminated from contention Saturday in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia.

Kuznetsov hit 22 winners, compared to Wawrinka’s 16, and advanced to 2-8 against top-10 players in his career.

The two met just 11 days ago in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, with the world No. 4 advancing.

Kuznetsov said his intense study of match tape from their recent meeting helped him decipher some of Wawrinka’s weaknesses, via the ATP World Tour:

Murray and Denis Istomin headlined the nightcap, and the Scot had to hold off the Uzbekistani in a back-and-forth second set for the victory, which had some drama.

Midway through the second set and at the match’s climatic stage, Murray discovered he and Istomin were playing with women’s balls.

Murray was vocally upset that such a mistake occurred, via ESPN:

With Nadal, Wawrinka and Roger Federer out, Murray and Novak Djokovic are the remaining headliners in the men’s competition, which continues through next Sunday.

And with the way things have gone thus far, it wouldn’t be shocking to see one of those two upset before it’s said and done.

Women’s Results

Serena Williams def. Zarina Diyas7-5, 6-3
Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Caroline Garcia4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6)
Ekaterina Makarova def. Petra Kvitova6-4, 6-4
Agnieszka Radwanska def. Madison Brengle6-3, 6-2
Timea Bacsinszky def. Ana Ivanovic7-5, 6-4
Heather Watson def. Yanina Wickmayer3-6, 7-5, 6-3
Simona Halep def. Julia Goerges6-4, 6-1

Williams appears to have brushed off her two upsets in the Australian Open and Indian Wells finals, as she marched forward with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Zarina Diyas in the third round Saturday.

It marked the world No. 1’s 750th career victory and 20th consecutive win at the Miami Open, which is the South Floridan’s unofficial home turf.

Having somewhat of a home-court advantage may have helped her withstand the weather.

"I live down the street, and I'm used to these conditions," Williams said, per ESPN.com. "Even though it was a little humid, I'm used to it and I love this weather."

After going toe-to-toe for most of the opening set, Williams claimed the win on a strong serve, via the Miami Open:

She’ll take on Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fourth round as she hopes to get her first tournament victory of 2016.

Ekaterina Makarova became the first to reach the fourth round following a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Petra Kvitova earlier Saturday.

The lefty was crafty with a comeback in the first set, scoring five straight to build the momentum she carried to the victory, via the WTA:

Makarova said she never flinched after falling into an early deficit, per the WTA's official website.

“[Kvitova] started unbelievable—a lot of winners. I just kept going and going, wanting to hit longer points and just being on the court and enjoying it,” she said.

Miami Open competition continues through next week, and if the early-round matches were any indicator, competitors are in for a wild week full of surprises.
