Djokovic wasn't supposed to be the only headliner of the day. He was supposed to share the bill with world No. 3 Roger Federer, who was set to take on Juan Martin Del Potro.
But the Miami Open announced just hours before he was set to take the court that he wouldn't be participating:
His replacement, Horacio Zeballos took full advantage of his second chance at a tournament run with a win over Del Potro in straight sets Friday 6-4, 6-4.
He doesn't get much of a reprieve in the third round as the 112th-ranked tennis player in the world will have to face No. 65 Fernando Verdasco.
Djokovic advanced with a comfortable, 6-3, 6-3 win over Edmund in 80 minutes.
The world No. 1 finished with three aces and won 25 of his 33 first serves, tallying 13 winners and 18 unforced errors.
He even had a nifty pocket catch on a sky-high return that was credited a fault by Edmund, via the ATP World Tour:
Djokovic, last week’s winner at Indian Wells, will continue his title defense in the Miami Open in the third round against Portugal’s Joao Sousa. And if the top player in men's tennis remains on cruise control the way he has been thus far in 2016, he could hoist another trophy by the end of next weekend.

The tournament's second seed and No. 3 player in the world Angelique Kerber picked up her first WTA win since she won the Australian Open at the end of January:
After experiencing early exits at the BNP Paribas Open and Qatar Total Open, Kerber made quick work of Barbora Strycova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Kerber had half the number of unforced errors as Strycova's 30 and got 71 percent of her first serves in. The WTA showed her lone ace of the day:
It was just the start she wanted, as she spoke with the media after her match, via WTATennis.com:
"It was a great start for me. I knew that Barbora was a tough opponent and it was a tricky one - she's played very well this year. But I always go out there and try to play my game again and try to be tough mentally, run for every ball.
"
She will take on Kiki Bertens, who was taken to three sets by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. That's a rare feat for a Bertens opponent to push her to three sets this season. Of her 28 matches, she's been taken to a decisive frame just six times.
Last year's Wimbledon runner-up Garbine Muguruza came back from a set down to defeat Dominika Cibulkova.
Tennis TV showed the match stats:
The WTA showed Muguruza's winner to bring the match to its decisive third set:
The sister of the woman who beat Muguruza in the Wimbledon final, Venus Williams, wasn't so successful Friday in Miami as she was upset by Elena Vesnina in three sets.
After being shut out in the first set, Williams had to fight hard just to force a third set, via the WTA:
Having exerted so much in the second set, she didn't put up much of a fight in the third as Vesnina moved on to the next round with a 6-2 third-set win.
To cap off the night, Victoria Azarenka defeated Monica Puig in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the next round.
Azarenka recorded five aces, and Puig had eight double faults that prevented any chance of extending the match to three sets. Azarenka had three aces in the second set and needed each one of them to contain Puig. She broke once in the second set but missed on two more break-point opportunities.
First serve was also a key to Azarenka's win, recording 24 of 37 first-serve points. The momentum she gained after defeating Serena Williams in the Paribas Open final has carried over to Miami after this straight-set victory.
