Tyler Breeze and the Most Underutilized WWE Superstars

The Doctor Chris MuellerMar 24, 2016

The WWE roster is too big for everyone to be used properly, but there are a number of Superstars with a lot to contribute who are being underutilized by management.

Between the influx of NXT Superstars and fewer wrestlers being released every year than in the past, WWE is overflowing with talent.

Longtime employees like Stardust and Jack Swagger are being used sparingly, while NXT standouts like Tyler Breeze and The Ascension have been all but abandoned at this point.

You would think there would be enough time for these guys to be used, since WWE puts on several hours of programming each week, but it never works out that way.

This slideshow will look at some of WWE's most underutilized talents. This is not a ranked list, so don't assume anything by the order of the entries.

Tyler Breeze

1 of 7

Being a popular character in NXT doesn't guarantee success on the main roster, and Tyler Breeze is the perfect example to prove that point.

Breeze is charismatic, great in the ring and has a standout character, but for one reason or another, his push was abandoned just weeks after his debut.

This is one of those situations where there is no logic to the decision. He could be a great midcard heel, and he definitely doesn't deserve to be kept on the sidelines.

His relationship with Summer Rae made sense because their gimmicks meshed so well, but that was dropped for no apparent reason. They didn't even have a real breakup angle. They just came out and said they were parting ways amicably.

Breeze should have been put into the Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania, but he wasn't even considered. Because of all this, people are going to think twice before they make the jump from NXT to the main roster, and that is not the way things should work.

Los Matadores

2 of 7

WWE's tag team division has some incredible talent, but the matches have started to become repetitive because only a few teams are being pushed to the top.

The Usos, The Dudley Boyz and The New Day seem to be the only ones fighting for the Tag Team Championships, with The League of Nations only recently added to the mix.

Los Matadores may have a ridiculous gimmick, but their talent is more than enough to justify using them more often.

If management would allow them to perform as themselves without the bullfighter gimmick, they could produce some show-stealing matches against some of the other teams on the roster.

Damien Sandow

3 of 7

Try to think about the last time you saw Damien Sandow win a match on television. It's hard to do, right?

For a guy who was pushed to the point of winning the Money in the Bank briefcase, you would think WWE could find something for him to do.

Sandow has been handed ridiculous gimmicks and made them work every time. The crowd loves him, and he has great technical ability.

If WWE has a good reason for not using him more often, it's not clear what it is to the rest of us. He could even be a great manager thanks to his above-average mic skills.

They say the cream always rises to the top, but that doesn't seem to apply when it's Vince McMahon making the decisions.

Darren Young

4 of 7

Darren Young was already being used less and less when Titus O'Neil was suspended, so it's not like he is being kept off TV because his tag team partner isn't around.

Young might not be in the running for a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but there are plenty of ways to use someone with Young's skills.

He is athletic, good in the ring and decent on the mic. Even if he is being used to put over other midcard stars, it would be better than doing nothing at all.

Young is someone who might benefit from a short run in NXT. He could help the younger talent while breathing new life into his own career.

The Ascension

5 of 7

The Ascension was NXT's most dangerous tag team for several months, but they have become little more than a joke on the main roster.

Two big guys with a unique look sounds like a recipe for a successful tag team, but ever since they were brought up to the main roster, Konnor and Viktor have been mishandled.

They had some great matches against The Lucha Dragons in NXT, but they have never been given the chance to put on that kind of performance on the main roster.

And let's not even get into the randomness of their alliance with Stardust. WWE is great at turning promising talents into top stars, but it's just as good at squandering resources like The Ascension.

Stardust

6 of 7

Speaking of Stardust, few Superstars have ever been handled worse than Cody Rhodes. This is a guy who should have had at least one world title under his belt by now, but his talents have been wasted.

He has been given a few different gimmicks over the years, and each time he has made the character work. It's almost like someone has been trying to get him to fail, only for Rhodes to succeed in spite of their efforts.

His tag team with Goldust was outstanding, but their breakup storyline was absolute garbage. Now he finds himself in the IC title Ladder match at WrestleMania, but it's not because he is being pushed.

At this point, the best thing for Rhodes would be for him to drop the Stardust character and go back to just being himself. Otherwise he will always be looked at as a lesser version of the character his brother created 20 years ago.

Jack Swagger

7 of 7

Jack Swagger has incredible power, great technical ability and the name of a famous astronaut. So why is he being used less than a parka in Florida?

Swagger got over with Zeb Colter by his side, but the pairing has been separated with no real explanation or logic.

He was being positioned as the next Kurt Angle early on, but after a failed world title run, he was never given the same kind of push again.

Swagger would be better off going to one of the many smaller promotions competing for the No. 2 spot behind WWE at this point, because it's obvious WWE doesn't see him as a priority anymore.

Everyone on this list deserves better treatment than they are getting, but they're not the only ones. Who do you think WWE is underutilizing?
