The derby will be a 1 1/8 miles race, and the field is compiled entirely of three-year-olds.
Mo Tom is the odds-on favorite heading into Saturday's race, but he's also a hometown favorite. His trainer, Tom Amoss, is from Louisiana, and his owners, Gayle and Tom Benson, are the owners of the New Orleans Saints.
Amoss is feeling the pressure too, as he spoke with Lenny Shulman of BloodHorse.com: "The local fans come out to see this horse and I don't want to let them down."
He's going to have to compete with Gun Runner, who won the Risen Star and will start on the rail. If Gun Runner gets a quick start out of the gates, he will be tough to track down on the inside.
However, a slow start could create far too much work for him, forcing him to get outside, move up in the field and then move back in. That's why starting in the sixth stall could be advantageous for Mo Tom. He'll have an opportunity to stay the course in the middle of the pack and make his move when it presents itself.
